Good question - I hope some mommies have some good responses! Would love to know some too.
Im laughing right now - because my daughter has a field day with my maxi pads - she says mommy has a diaper..lol..and opens them up and puts one on.....I kind of brush it off - I wonder when that question will pop up too lol

Ask Alex what she thinks and how she thinks a baby gets there. Sometimes kids are not looking for the real reason but a "kiddie" reason. Like, if Yael is crying, Alex might want to know how she was in your belly so she can go back in there

I said God put the baby there. But I talk to DS a lot about God, so this did not shock him. I understand this kind of explanation isn't for everyone though.

We tried for a long time to have Baby #2( they are 7 1/2 years apart). One day DD#1 said to me, "Why don't you just ask God to put a baby in your belly?" I said, OK, I will. She said, when I go to bed I am going to ask God to put a baby in your belly too!

My DD is almost 5 and this is a constant question from her. First we said God puts the baby in your belly. When she needed more info we tried to make a story that when a mommy and daddy love each other they pray to God and when the mommy is sleeping God puts a tiny baby in the mommy's belly to grow.
This story bought us some time but now she is VERY specific in wanting to know how the tiny baby gets from God in the sky all the way to the mommy's belly....... we have not come up with a decent answer to make her happy yet......we just tell her that is one of the miracles of life...

We haven;t told our kids (3 and 5) that we are expecting #3 and will probably wait until its pretty obvious to them that I'm getting pretty chubby, so I'd love to know what others have said!
Also what do you say when "how does the baby come out?"!

My 4 year old asked when I was pregnant with #3 and I told him daddy put a seed in my belly and it grows into a baby. He didnt ask how daddy did it he just wanted to know simple details. We have always been honest and open with our kids and it seems to work when I just answer him with simple words and descriptions that he can understand. It is also easier that I have had c sections so the doctor cuts the baby out and I dont have to explain deliveries.

See, the problem is I'm atheist and we aren't raising Alex religiously, so if I explain it that way she'll have absolutely no idea what I'm talking about!

This I have explained to Alex because I had a csection too, and it seems I've traumatized her. She keeps telling DH she doesn't want to have a baby because she doesn't want the doctor to cut her belly

I told my son the truth at 2.5!
I didn't get into the mechanics. I just said that Daddy and Mommy had a special cuddle and that Daddy gave Mommy a piece of himself and that it got together with a piece of Mommy and grew into a baby.
When he was older he wanted more details and my son knew the proper terminology for reproductive parts very young. Too young probably. The mystery as to HOW the spermatazoa meets the ovum is still unresolved to them.. but they have the science down.

That's where having c-sections is a blessing.
Actually, DD (4) has been really curious about this topic recently. How did I come out? Did it hurt? I was pretty forthcoming about it although didn't get into any scary details or anything. Luckily, she hasn't asked how she got in there yet!

Sounds wonderful to me!
Sorry but I dread more 'the talk' with my daughter than i do explaining where babies come from.
I agree with PP the truth is easiest. Simple terms and descriptions. Daddy puts a seed in mommy and a baby grows.

I explained it in a similar way to my 6.5 year old. Now she tells everyone that DH and I cuddle a lot

my 4yr old neice asked me when i was pregnant how the baby got in my belly - i told her dh andi prayed to God and he put it there. the next time she saw me she said SHE prayed to God and now she has a baby in her belly
When i gave birth she asked me where did the baby come out of , i tol dher my belly button LOL
