Where can you find out about town variance notices?

Where can you find out about town variance notices?
There is an empty lot across from our house, and recently one of those "Variance" Signs with the variance # has appeared on a tree on the property. It says its a subdivision related matter.
Id like to know what its about. Im assuming I can call the town, but do you know which dept, or if this kind of information is available online somewhere?
Its the town of Smithtown.
