where do the school supplies go in June?
I was just thinking this, as I sorted through all the supplies I bought and packing their backpacks.
The past few years, I've been asked for Fiskar scissors, ruler, etc. I don't ever recall getting them back at the end of the year. I can understand that some items run out (like glue sticks) but what about items like scissors and rulers, etc?
Do teachers just have a closet full of scissors over the years?

I was wondering the SAME thing as I looked through my DS's box of school supplies I ordered. This will be his 3rd pair of scissors I've gotten for him. I have never gotten them back the previous years and I know that they are still on the list for the new pre-k kids that are coming in this year, so its not like they are being reused for the next wave of kids coming in.

Things like scissors and rulers go into her pencil case and we get that back as well as all her notebooks at the end of the year. We never get back pencils, glue, tape but that goes into a community box.

We received almost everything back. The only thing that was not returned was the scissors.

I always have my students take home any supplies that they have left. Honestly, often they lose them or break them and by the end of the year they are using the extra ones I bought/have for the class to borrow. (I'm talking 1st/2nd grade)

i am the mother of a 20-year-old and i have the answer!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
when we were emptying out the house when we moved from NJ to CA, i found ALL the school supplies at the back of his closet. some of the items hadn't even been opened.
i ended up giving them all away on freecycle.

I'll tell you where they go and you won't like it. In the trash. My dad is a school custodian and he always gets so upset at the end of the year because they toss everything. They usually ask him to come get their huge bags of garbage. Rolls of paper towels, baby wipes, unused crayons, pencils, scissors all goes in the trash. What a waste!!

No!! That pisses me off. I bought my ds a more expensive lefty pair of scissors that I want back at the end of the year. Why can't they just save all of the unused supplies?

What???? Omg, never!!!
Glue and glue sticks are community so at the end, kids toss dried out ones but I use ones that are still good the following year. Any left over tissues are used the next year. Scissors are labeled and returned. Other supplies stay in their desks. I can't tell you how many pencils are on the floor at the end of the day. I have kids pick them up and put them in a jar..

I always send home any left over supplies at the end of the year. Pencils, notebooks, folder, markers etc.
Students who start with scissors will often lose or break them by the end of the year. Maybe that's what's happening?

Is this an LI school? I was a city teacher for years and hoarded anything that was in remotely good condition. I taught middle school so things like scissors and rulers, etc, were not as necessary but I reused from year to year- and purchased my own of these because each kid didn't need his/her own.
I get all the reusable stuff back each year from my own child.

I received 90% of the school supplies back in June. I actually am reusing most of it for this year! Including scissors & 3.5 million glue sticks!

We get most stuff back. One year I got a huge bag of everything in my sons desk.
I want to know why I have to buy 24 pencils. Why don't they use the sharpener we had to buy.

What? I can't believe that. Where is this school? I save EVERYTHING I possibly can. I can't imagine that teachers throw good stuff out.

Many items get lost, broken, or possibly taken by another student.
ETA: The teacher may have found them around the room during the year and them saved in a closet for next year if there is no name on the supplies.

What school district is this? Not all schools do. My dad was a custodian for years and they hoarded everything that was left behind that was still in good use.
I can tell you that SD's old school in North Bellmore, didnt send back anything of hers. And they required a lot of markers and crayons and all sorts of art supplies. When i asked the last day of school where all her stuff was she responded that the teacher asked if the kids wanted to donate any to the school. I was fuming. Because they asked my 5 year old instead of letting parents know that was an option. I wouldve donated something but not all of it.

Most teachers keep the left over supplies in their closets and use it year to year, take them home or give it away

Most, if not all, of my students wanted to throw everything out at the end of the year. I caught as many rules, scissors, etc being thrown out and I put them into their backpacks, but I know a lot more supplies were thrown out by the students.
