Where Should My In-Laws Live?
My in-laws are currently in Rockland County. They spend a good deal of time with my kids on Long Island. They have started looking for a place closer to us.
They were both born and raised in the Midwest so high on the priority list would be a friendly town (they are definitely not keeping up with the Jones types). They don't need somewhere with great schools/higher taxes. They are both retired and like to go into the city, but easy train access isn't essential because they aren't commuting.
Are there any great towns that you would recommend for seniors? They have a house with a decent amount of land at the moment, but they are looking to downsize - maybe even to a condo/duplex/senior living community.
We are on the south shore along the Babylon train line in Nassau County. I think anywhere in Nassau or even Western Suffolk might work.
Please help!

My inlaws are in a 55+ in Sayville. It’s a great town and Patchogue is right there with a great town as well.

theres a townhouse/condo community in sayville for 55+ that my in laws looked at- it was nice they said, but they decided to stay in nassau

Moving from a house to a townhouse takes some getting used to. It's basically apartment living, you share walls and floors so you do hear your neighbors.
When DH and I were looking, we concentrated on Malverne and Lynbrook. Gave us that nice village feel and the area was really nice. Heard only good things about each town. We wound up not buying anything. Prices were going up and the taxes, oy. DH is retired and I want to retire in 8 years. I don't want to have to keep working to pay for a house and taxes on LI.

If proximity to the city isn't important, I'd consider moving farther east to keep property taxes down. The Babylons, perhaps?

my parents just moved to the Willow Wood condos in Wantagh and LOVE it! it's not 55+ but there are people of all ages. I'm not sure if there are any units available but definitely check. the Willow Wood shopping center is around the corner and walkable. The community has an inground pool, clubhouse, tennis court and playground. They're so happy!

I would say it depends on whether they want a house or a condo/co-op/townhouse, and what the budget is. Also, whether they want a 55+ development.
It's hard to find affordable condos in the Merrick/Bellmore/Wantagh/Seaford area. The Willowwood condos mentioned are great, but $$$. They are typically in the $300K to $450K range (depending on beds/baths... maybe high $200Ks for the 1 bed/1 bath), but property taxes are comparable to a single family home and there are common charges, too. So it may not be affordable.
East Meadow has a lot of over 55+ options, and while it doesn't have that small town feel, a lot of the senior developments there have their own community with activities and social events.
There are some good options for downsizers in Massapequa, Amityville (more in the village/harbor areas), Lindenhurst.
Rockville Center and Lynbrook are options too, even Long Beach, for co-ops and condos IF they want a more city feel.
Garden City also has a lot of apartment for purchase options, many of which are walkable to their town. Mineola, too.
If they are looking for a single-family home, then that is a different story.
