Where to bring a pet to have him put down UPDATE mid page1 PICS ADDED
The time has come for us to think about making the decision to put down our 11.5 year old American Bulldog.
We go to probably THE most expensive vet on the island for the outstanding care they give our animals but quite honestly, we are broke right now and knowing there isn't much left to do for our old man I was wondering if there are less expensive options for putting him down. Any info would be helpful. I feel terrible just calling vets and saying "How much?"

AS a fellow American Bulldog owner my heart breaks for you. I know how much love they give. We have been happy with Farmingville Animal Hospital. They have fair rates and are very compassionate.

We recently had to take my parent's dog to the emergency vet in Elmhurst, Queens. They were reasonably priced and very compassionate.

I'm so sorry for this heartbreaking decision. Money is tight all over and I would call local vets to see how much they charge. Let them know that you are strapped right now but one thing I would not skimp on is a tranquilizer before the euth. procedure. I always advise animal owners to ask for a tranquilizer for their animal as soon as they get to the office. Then sit with your animal until you notice he is very relaxed. Let the vet know you are ready and stay with your animal until the end. Best of luck and my thoughts and prayers are with you.

Re: Where to bring a pet to have him put down
I don't know where you live, not sure to recommend my vet or not. Maybe you could call your vet, since they ahve seen your dog all along and explain the situation, they might help you out. I had my vet do this for me with my kitty in December.
I'm sorry about your dog

Re: Where to bring a pet to have him put down
UPDATE: So today we are going to lay our beloved dog to rest. Thank you Atlas for 11.5 great years. Thank you for the smells, slobber, and eaten paper only a bulldog can give you. But moreso, thank you for the love, the googly eyed puppy looks, the affection, the gentleness you've shown to Sydnie and the laughs buddy. I love you, RIP <3 2-14-11 <3

Re: Where to bring a pet to have him put down UPDATE mid page1
so sorry Anne I know how hard it is
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable. All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind. They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....
