Congrats! I'd recommend Norman Landsberg on 47th street in the diamond district. The prices are drastically lower than retail. Another reputable guy is Steve Hausman (not sure where his store is) and Rudy Sampieri down on Canal St.

The setting for my engagement ring is from Michael C. Fina- we had a good experience with them. My wedding band was custom designed at Elsa's in Farmingdale. They were great to work with- I would highly recommend them.

ID Jewelry in the Diamond District DH got my engagement ring there and had a great experience!
or Gennerro Jeweler's in Bellmore. We had a diamond necklace reset into a ring. The diamond never left our sight. we got to be a part of the whole thing. ETA : I just noticed that you heard mixed reviews for them, obviously we had no problem. Although it wasn't an engagement ring. It is very busy there.

so cool! Norman has been very good to us! He sent me to have my ring mounted at Gary Flyer's around the corner after he sold it to us. So special!

Go see Kaye at Artistic Jewelers in Farmingdale.
She also worked out a payment plan with DH when he was saving up for my ring.

Re: Where to buy diamond ring...jewlery store suggestions?
We used Frank and Fran in Wantagh (by Ivarone's) to help my brother who is in the Air Force get his engagement ring and he did and amazing job.
Genero's is great but, they can be very pricey.
Frank was wonderful. He worked with my brother over the phone and internet and we were there every step of the way. When my brother and his fiancé came to visit last week they went in just to meet him.
He has also done a TON of work for my family recently. My grandma passed away and we remade and fixed a ton of jewelry.
