Where to get DSL service....
My parents want to join the technology age and get a computer (they still have webTV and dial-up). They want to get DSL....but verizon DSL is not available for their phone number (they are in Holbrook). What other companies provide DSL service that I can look into? Thanks.

Do they definitely want DSL and not cable?
ETA: because I had DSL and HATED it, got cable and love it!

Yeah....baby steps :) They don't have cable, they have dish network....and they don't need it to be super-fast cable....DSL speed would be just fine for them.

Problem is that if Verizon says that DSL isn't available in their area, it *really* isn't available in their area. It isn't a question of just calling another company.
I was just having this conversation earlier today, and I went through this when I was living in East Meadow, because the apt. was illegal and we got cable through the landlords who wouldn't let us upgrade to cable highspeed.
DSL is tricky, and availability is based on physical location. DSL runs out of centralized places, so if you live too far from the center, you won't be able to get it. The guy on the phone explained to me that even though he had DSL, his next door neighbor couldn't get it. I know, it's totally rediculous. Their only highspeed internet option is cable modem.

The reason I hated DSL wasn't because it was too slow. It was plenty fast the 1% of the time it actually worked.

Oh well....I guess they will have to wait until it's available. I don't think it would be cost effective for them to get a cable modem since they don't have cable....they charge more...plus cable is more expensive than DSL to begin with. My mom says that when she spoke to Verizon, that it would be in her area before the end of the year....so we'll have to wait and see. Thanks.

WE got a cable modem b/c DSL is also not available in our area. We didn't have cable before that, but got it mainly to get the modem.
