Where to start? (packing question)

We are most likely closing on our house at the end of June. I would like to start packing things up from now, but have no idea where to begin. I really want to get a jump start on it.

What do you think I can start packing up from now?

Any packing tips you can share?

Thanks!

(the next 2 months are going to fly by - I don't want to be scrambling around the week before we move getting everything packed)

we are doing this now too... .we are buying ILs house from them and moving this summer.... i started with going through the closets/cabinets and really looking at things we don't use all the time ( extra blankets, a coffee maker, fancy serving dishes that we won't use before then, books, etc...) we dont even have our house on the market yet and i'm already stressing abut moving!!

Definitely go through everything...start now. Even go through things and donate or toss stuff out. It not only helps with the packing...but the unpacking!Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Where to start? (packing question)

Now is the time to PURGE. Go through your closets and donate or sell stuff you don't need.

Then pack out of season clothes/shoes.

Then pack stuff you don't need or won't need right away.

I agree. You can also pack breakables in your out of season clothes so you don't have to use newspapers!

I definitely agrew with purging! then start in rooms you don't use or really need. Spare bedrooms and dining room are two places that probably make the most sense.

I agree.

I packed vases, picture frames, china and lots of dishes that I didn't need.

I would start in the rooms least used and try to pack them completely up. Then go to the more used rooms - and then try to purge and then pack all non essential items. I would leave what you use most until last.

For now - pack books, pictures, vases, knick knacks, non everyday glasses and china, clothes you don't need (say winter stuff).

Also use the time to try to get rid of anything you really don't need or want anymore.

Also don't forget to label each box so it helps when you need to unpack or find something later - i.e. living room/books, kitchen/extra pots and pans etc. This way when you go to unpack you can prioritize what you need to upack first

Ok - so - we packed up our guest room - threw out 3 HUGE contractors bags of crapola, donated another 2 bags of clothing to the Salvation Army, and managed to pack up pretty much everything else in there!

One room down - 6 more to go!!!!

Re: Where to start? (packing question)

After moving SOOO many times, I have found a GREAT trick.

I have a box that has about several days worst of clothes, underwear, shoes, bathroom stuff (make up, shampoo, soap), towels, bed sheets.

This is my survival box. The one, in case I can't get to all my boxes, that I will need to survive.

I put a HUGE X in red on the box on all sides so I can locate it easily.

Re: Where to start? (packing question)

Ugh- we close on Friday- probably moving 5/19. We have no room to pack anything! Our apartment is so tiny, theres no room for a single box!
Luckily we will have the house for a few weeks, so I plan to start packing up things I wont need, and storing themin the attic while we work ont he rest of the house!
Moving in trickles will probably make the process a little easier, too. Hopefully...
