I say In. Not saying it is grammatically correct but it is what I say. In my defense, I live in Queens (which I know is technically part of LI)Chat Icon

The funny thing though is, I always say, well it's an island so we live "ON" an island. Makes sense.

But, then I think about other islands. Like Hawaii, Cuba, etc.
And you don't say you live ON Cuba or ON Hawaii

But yet for Long Island it just seems so logical to say you live ON an Island.

Things that make you go hmmmm...

Right, like Brooklyn and Queens are both on the island, but people don't say I live ON Queens, I live ON Brooklyn Chat Icon

And when it comes to the state of Rhode Island people don't say I live ON Rhode Island. Even though it's not technically an island but it has the word island in its name.

But you would say you live IN Nassau or IN Suffolk. You wouldn’t say on for those either.

As someone born and raised in Queens, it most certainly is NOT part of LI, geography be damned! Chat Icon

I say on.

Good point. Maybe we say on because its an island but part of a state/larger geographic jurisdiction? Like I would say on Nantucket or Martha's Vineyard. I don't know, just spitballing.

Exactly. And you live IN Bethpage, not ON it.
