While thinking of names for you DC do you wonder how people will pronouce it?
We are pretty much set on Daniella for our but we both really like Mara. The thing is I know people won't pronouce it the way we will and I know it will annoy me. My DH seems to forget that we are in America, not Croatia so it is going to sound different.
Anyone else have this problem.

That's why we chose the spelling Madelyn. I wanted Madeleine, but I knew people would pronounce it Mad-eLAINE

All my life people have screwed up my name, so that's why I like Madison...if someone screws that up they are just dumb.

I knew someone was going to ask this and I don't really know how I would type it out. The closest pronouncenation I can think of is if you said Ma then Ra.
If Beblina reads this maybe she can explain it better

Yes, that was a definite consideration for me.
If only for ME. I was not born in the US so:
1/ I don't want to butcher my own kid's name 2/ I wanted people to know how to pronounce it.

It has definitely been a consideration...I have never had a problem with my name BUT my mothers name is Deanna and I always got annoyed when people called her Diane or Diana or Deena.

Not so much how they will pronounce it - more like, how they will spell it. My name is Aimee and no one ever spelled it my way - it was always AMY.

My old boss named his son that and they started calling him Jack as soon as he was born just to avoid butchering his name.

Re: While thinking of names for you DC do you wonder how people will pronouce it?
I have had to spell my name out for people my whole life, so yes this is a big issue for me -- I don't want my child to have the same problem. If I do use an unusual name, I will be sure it is spelled just how it sounds.
I've been - Tara, Lara, Karen, Sara, Cara, Fara --- and I could never find those cool license plates with my name on them!

I feel this way about my boy's name...we have always wanted (past 5 yrs) to name our son Giovanni Carmelo but I hear people down here (fl) say G-EE-o VAn E instead of Joe-Von-E my husband doesnt care though, he said we'll just have to keep correcting them...

Our name is not hard to pronounce, but my name is difficult to spell and people mispronounce it too. It's annoying, but I say if you love a name, go for it...it hasn't affected me too much!

Ive lived in NY my entire life and I would pronounce it G-EE-o vanee also....I think anyone who isnt very Italian would do the same....now Ill know to ask if I ever come across it!! ETA: I asked my husband and mother in law(who are 100% Italian, and they would say Geeovanni too!)

People here say Ge-o van ni too, even my italian-speaking friends. I am wondering if there is a different pronunciation for dialect?

Thats why I think I will choose pretty bland names. People insist on calling me
LESS-LIE
when my name is pronounced
LEZ-LIE
The "s" is like the "s" in NOSE.

I've always heard it as the Joe version rather than the geo version - mind you i don't have anyone named that in my family - but either way, I prefer the Joe and for some reason, don't know why, the geo irks me. I guess I'll have to learn how to deal with it. lol
