Who bought a Forclosure?
Anyone?
I always hear horrible things about what the people do to the house before the leave.

Or even after they leave! A friend of mine bought a forslosure and somebody burnt it down!!!! Then after she was almost done rebuilding it, someone set fire to it again! Luckliy her contractor got there early and saw the fire so not much damage was done the second time.

Re: Who bought a Forclosure?
We bought a Dummies book on general homebuying and there was a section on foreclosures. The author pointed out that often people whose homes are foreclosed have the "If I can't have it no one can" attitude. I also used to work PT in a real estate office and one of the salespeople said the same thing, that often they would get trashed.
But I know this topic has come up in thread before and some people have successfully bought foreclosures that were in decent shape.

Re: Who bought a Forclosure?
Im kinda against it. I know someone that it happened to. They did horrible things to the house. Cement in toilet bowls Furniture in the inground pool. Someone else said that a house around the block from my parents went into forclosure and the ripped all the cabinets and counters off. I don't know.
My DH is for it. And he keeps bringing it up. We saw a house on a website for 152,000.00 we saw a similar house for 349,000.00 (Levittown)

Re: Who bought a Forclosure?
There is currently a foreclosure on my Dad's block in Plainview (very nice area and excellent school district). The couple were divorcing (after living there for almost 20 years, and their children are in late high school years/early college) and they were asking too much money for the house so no one bought... well, I heard from one of the neighbors that they defaulted on their mortgage (probably as a result of the divorce) and the bank owns it. I drove by one day to see huge padlocks on the doors and a "notice" tapped to the front door. I tried to peak in the windows and from what I could tell it looks like they trashed the place. I couldn't believe this in such a neighborhood.
Pretty sad... they lived there for about 20 years... they could have been 2/3 of the way through their mortgage.
It's still for sale, from what I can tell. It would be a good deal but most people who look in that neighborhood don't want a real fixer-upper.

Re: Who bought a Forclosure?
I think sometimes the trashing gets done by neighborhood hooligans who break in when they see the padlock and notice on the door.

Re: Who bought a Forclosure?
i would buy one if it is in the right area
Someone bought one on my dads block. It was DISGUSTING, ya knwo the ugly house on the block. A young couple bought it and it is BEAUTIFUL!!!! They got it for a great price and now they live in a GREAT area with a beautiful house.
I think it could DEFINATELY be worth it...given the right situation!

Re: Who bought a Forclosure?
the house i saw was in levittown, it is going to auction on july 12th, the judgement amount is $113,114.19. I believe that would also be the starting bid. I drove by the house yesterday during the day and it looked abandon, no cars in the driveway, high grass, then last night i took kris by it to show her there is a brand new nissan frontier in the driveway. There was also another home in levittown going to auction the same day, in much better shape that had a new tahoe with rims and another new suv in the driveway. What i dont understand is why people would be driving these cars and let their houses go up for auction.

That is the second one. In 2001 it looks as it was in good shape...redone siding.

Re: Who bought a Forclosure?
I bought one - and while it's been a lot of work, it's well worth it. I paid less than $150K (5 years ago) - and will put it on the market within the next year or so for $420K-ish. Since we've done all the renovations ourselves, we've only spent about $40K - and that includes new windows, doors, roof, heat, electric, bathrooms, driveway, maple floors, and kitchen.
I didn't have any previous-owner horror stories - just lots and lots of reconstruction of the mechanicals like plumbing and electric and heat. The house had actually been vacant for about 8 months, so I also had a lot of graffiti to deal with (next door neighbor's kid used to hang out in there to smoke and drink).
It's been a great experience for me! If they were easier to come by, I'd do it again in a heart-beat! Since the house was abused, we were able to move walls and create the best house for us!

If your question is directed to me - it's in Huntington Station. I don't have any pictures on me, but I have plenty at home. (I think I may have posted them previously, so I'll skim my past posts).

yup house pretty much looks the same, except the driveway is cracking. it was on a foreclouser website that my brother-in-law joined and gave him his info, it stated it was going to auction, I guess that means its already past the foreclosure state.

Re: Who bought a Forclosure?
I grew up on Center Lane and my parents still live there. The house is not terrible but the house next to it is run down, but the other houses around it are nice. It is in mid block location and would be worth it if you can get it for a cheap price. The elementary school is great and the Levittown pool and the library are in walking distance.

Re: Who bought a Forclosure?
I grew up in Levittown too. It was not really mid block kind of close to the pike. I don't remembe the houses next door looking to bad.

Re: Who bought a Forclosure?
Center Lane is such a long block I know what you mean it is kinda close to tpke but not really where you can see it. I used to be very good friends with the people next door but then the parents split and the house seemed to go a little down hill. Like I said if the price is reasonable i say go for it and update it.

Scott, I like the one you posted in East Meadow. It looks nice. Why do you think it is so cheap?
