Re: who can tell me about william flloyd school district?
My sister has raised two children that went through that district from Elementary to H.S. They both did very well - my one niece rec'd a full scholarshipo to Dowling and the other is in 10th grade now.
I think it is more about the family life and the discipline and structure at home that helps them get a good education. Plus, I beleive that district (at least in the past) had very good "grades" overall when they report it in the papers.

Anything in particular you want to know? My Dh grew up there (Mastic) and my IL's and SIL still live in the area. And my cousin/aunt/uncle live in Shirley (same school district).
I could def ask anything if you want

Re: who can tell me about william flloyd school district?
well- it is dirt cheap, i SWEAR! what exit is it off the LIE? is it designated massive flood zone or something...??
i never thought of living so far out east, but it seems like we would be able to straight out buy something with no mortgage...which would equal me not having to work, staying home with kids, living the family life we want to.....

Re: who can tell me about william flloyd school district?
I have to say Mastic is a bit better than mastic beach in my opinion and from what i've seen growing up with my couins and been with DH for the last 10 years. I say stay above Mastic Road.
WF parkway is exit 68 off LIE. But further south so is Sunrise hwy.
It's really come a long way in the last 10-15 years. I remember my cousin calling me cause she was so excited they got a wendys!
my Il's read something that Mastic/shirley is gong to become the new Hamptons
My mom used to go out there when she was little for her summers to stay with her grandparents from queens-out to the country.
I would buy for the same reasons as you in mastic/shirley area, but DH REFUSES to go back there.

Re: who can tell me about william flloyd school district?
Oh Smith point park is right down Wiliam floyd parkway-at the end. The beaches in Mastic beach are more of like inlets, docks, and boat launching areas.
Dh and my cousins and of course me LOVED being so close to the beach. we used to walk or ride there
I'm not sure about the insurance part, I could check for you. My IL's are above mastic road, they are inland, both my IL's and Aunt are not in Flooding zones.
ETA: What i can tell you that i know about the schools is that the high school is 1/2 brand new and was just finished expansion my DH's senior year about 9 years ago. The highschool is large. DH's graduating class was 400-500 students, a little more than mine-i graduated from Lindenhurst. Not sure how it is now though, just from seeing the area expand, they've been building lots of new houses there. Also from what i've seen, the areas are random. You could have 2 beautiful houses then small bungalows on the same block. It was a vacation town when it started.

I agree. It is not a place that many people would move to. The houses are cheap for a reason.

Re: who can tell me about william flloyd school district?
I would have to say alot of the above is exactly what I would say.
With every area you will have good and bad.
There is a Mastic and Mastic Beach. Out of the two I would look in Mastic. But you can also look in Shirley - it too is VERY affordable.
About the schools - I honestly think it is the upbringing the children have. I have had (and some are still in school) 4 nieces and nephews attend these schools. They ALL have awesome grades - love the schools and have had no problems with the schools.
You do hear alot of bad rap about the town, but honestly, I think alot of towns do.
About the sex offensers and stuff, yes, there seem to be alot in these areas. For one, I really don't check other towns, so I have no idea what the statics to this town are to others (so that might be something to look at and compare). Plus for some reason there seems so be some clustering of the sex offensers being put in Mastic/Mastic Beach area.
Let me know if you have any questions I would be more than happy to help

We lived in Mastic Beach when we relocated to NY 9 years ago. I thought ohh Beach in the name, can't be too bad! WRONG! We lived there a little over a year and I would never move back. Between the dumping of the sex offenders and the crime, it isn't somewhere I would want to raise my children. There is a reason the homes are so cheap there.

Re: who can tell me about william flloyd school district?
I can help with this question.
I live in Mastic, but in an area of Mastic that is Eastport/South Manor SD (Manorville), Manorville Fire Department & Ambulance (we have a sub-station in our neighborhood) called Manor Park.
Here is a website about Manor Park to check out:
http://manorparkcivic.org
The Eastport/South Manor Jr-Sr High School is brand new and beautiful. I live about 3 or 4 miles away from the new school and used to jog on the track (before I was pregnant).
The property taxes are lot less than Manorville taxes, but IMO you get the benefits of Manorville.
The houses cost less too than Manorville. Manor Park is full of young families, on Halloween we have a ton of kids coming to our door in costumes with their parents. It is so cute!
Manor Park is located South of the LIE and North of Sunrise and is about 10 minutes away from Smith Point Beach (which is great in the summers).
If you are looking to move out east and get the most for your $$, I would suggest Manor Park in Mastic that is part of the South Manor SD.
Manor Park is also very close to Center Moriches, which is a cute little town. I do alot of my errands and shoppiing there, it is less crowded than Mastic and just an overall cute town.
I am orginally from Hampton Bays, so I like the small town feel and that is how I feel where I live. My neighbors are great and we can count on them. My next door neighbor's daughter was my flower girl in our wedding, the family across the street has a key to house to watch our dogs if we go away for the weekend, the family to the left to us came to my baby shower.
If you have any questions, please feel free to FM.

I know someone who moved to the Mastic area and is not happy with it... also, I interviewed once at a school at William Floyd - and it seemed a bit rowdy, but who knows if things have changed since then...

Re: who can tell me about william flloyd school district?
I am not trying to offend anyone.
But for a mother of a child that is going into the school district in a couple of years - can you tell me why
- you would never live in the area?
- the reasons your friends/family members hated it?
- or anything you do have on the district?
- or even the area itself?
Please do not post to Summers thread the reasons why, thinking you are going to offend me. Or please instead of FM'ing it, you can post it here, because I would like to know as well. If there are things I need to know that maybe I didn't research enough, maybe it should be posted on here.
Also for the fact that if there are others looking in these areas - when they do a search they will see your answers as well.
Thanks!

Re: who can tell me about william flloyd school district?
marcie, I did FM summer yesterday about my opinions on the topic. I grew up there and my ENTIRE family still lives in Shirley/Mastic Beach. I graduated from WFHS and turned out quite successful, as well as a lot of my friends. However, I will tell you that 99% of my friends don't live there anymore.
I graduated in 1995 so some time has past. However, my brother is a junior in the HS and my cousins have children in the district so I'm still familiar with it. Back when I was there it still was not considered a "good district" I think the major change in the last 10 years has really just been a behavioral one. The kids fight a lot, there are rumors of gang activity (or wanna-be gang activity), there is the sex offender thing on the rise.
But sticking to the school itself, I think the one thing has remained constant, and I remember trying to explain this to someone while I was in HS. If you are a naturally driven person, OR have a supportive family and great homelife then yes, you'll have some "rough" people to deal with but you will receive a good education. And you will probably even possess a bigger sense of street smarts than others you encounter in college. I would dare to even say that if you are an average student you will be fine. I think that if you are a special ed. student you will get the attention that you need. I think where students get left behind so to speak are those non-motivated students, who have no support system at home, don't see any value in education, think they know everything about the world..those will be the ones who may fail. And I think those are the ones who contribute to this terrible stigma or the school district. And unfortunately a lot of students fall into that category. I thought my teachers were great. They had honors programs, AP classes and all that stuff.
Now would I ever go back and live there....honestly, no I wouldn't. As much as I'd love to live near my family I just cannot get past the crowds of people who live there that give the hardworking, decent people a bad name. And I hate that people look down on others who live there. Because there are nice areas, nice families, nice houses, good teachers. But unfortunately other ruin it for the rest.
Sorry for the novel here, but I have history there. It's still home to me. And this topice is near and dear to my heart. Marcie, I think that your children will do fine in the school district if you are committed to advocating for them when they need help, encouraging them to do well, and stressing the importance of education.

Re: who can tell me about william flloyd school district?
My Dh told me that Suffolk built the 7th precint just for Mastic and Mastic Beach alone....not a good area...sorry if this offends anyone, but the crime statistics alone speak for themselves.
