Who Commutes to NYC?

Who commutes to NYC here? How far along are you? Do you find it's getting harder?

I commute to NYC from LI and I'll be 6 months pregnant on Sunday...I'm finding it sooo hard lately.

I'm really getting wiped out...and I have so much more time to go. How are you all dealing with it?

Oh side note: I've been offered a seat on the subway only TWICE! One by a woman and once by a tourist! Chat Icon

Re: Who Commutes to NYC?

I do. I take an express train which leaves at 8:20 and theoretically gets there at 8:54 (I never get out of the train before 9) and then I take the subway 1 stop.

I am not having any trouble yet. Since I am the 2nd to last stop to the city I usually have to sit in the middle seat of the 3 seats- and that IS annoying, but other than that, its not too bad. Until Nov. I was living in the city so its a big change from my 10 minute door to door trip, but what can you do.

I am 26w 4 days.

Re: Who Commutes to NYC?

I take the subway from Queens into the city. It is really getting very hard for me. I hardly ever get a seat. I am dreading the morning commute daily, I am lucky that my DH picks me up from work on most days.

I try to take my time walking and going up the stairs. When I am standing on the train, I try to lean on the door so my back doesn't hurt as much. It's getting very hard. But, what can I do...I just have to do it.

I have yet to have someone offer me a seat. I know they see the big bellly, but they ignore me or look away Chat Icon

I am at 27 weeks!

I take the train from Kings Park. It's a long ride, but so far it hasn't been so bad. I'm only 9 weeks. I can't imagine doing it later on. I must be rough. Once I get to Penn I have a 15 min walk.

Re: Who Commutes to NYC?

I commute from Queens into the city... and if I waited for straphangers to get up, I'd still be on the train! So I take matters into my own hands. I take the local in & always catch the SAME seat (once an older lady came up to ME and asked me for my seat because she had back problems, and I politely declined & said "I'm sorry, but I'm pregnant", and the person next to me got up for her. Chat Icon). On the way home, I take the express, and sometimes am forced to stand up, but for the most part, I always move people over to make room for me (on the E train 7 people can fit in a row, and greedy people spread out for only 6 sometimes). No one has complained other than sucking their teeth... Chat Icon And the moment someone complains, I'm going to say "hey, buddy, I'm pregnant & require a seat, unless you want me to pass out and hold the WHOLE train up being a "sick passenger". So I should sit, what's YOUR excuse!?" Chat IconChat IconChat IconChat Icon
Btw, I am 20 wks along, and since I entered the 2nd trimester, I have my full energy. I hope that lasts. Chat Icon

OOO, I feel your pain. I live in Eastern LI and drive to the Bronx everyday and work in a Middle SchoolChat Icon
I am the dean here for the little darlings.
Yes, there are days that it is terrible!
And to make matters worse, I used to smoke, esp. in the car. Not anymore, so it makes the commute even worse.

I wish you luck. :O)
I am just glad that it has been a mild winter. When it snows, its worse. People forget how to drive and my hour and 15 minutes becomes 3 hours and 15 minutes. Then Nature callsChat Icon

Re: Who Commutes to NYC?

Let's hope February is mild too. When are you due? I am due April 30th and my last day of work (as of right now) is April 28th. So I can just imagine how the commute will be then.

Don't worry- its very individual!! I am almost 7 months and I have my normal energy level. I think it depends on how active you are, how you eat, your personal body chemistry, etc... My sister was running around like a mad woman, exercising daily, shopping, etc... until she went to the hospital (including during labor).

Re: Who Commutes to NYC?

Im still commuting!!!

Im 35 weeks and commuting from Queens to Times Squares every day via train and then bus.

I rarely get a seat in the mornings - people just make believe they fall asleep and don't see me - well - occasionally a woman/ man will offer their seat to me - but its RARE!!! The worst is when they see your huge belly protruding from your coat and just stare at it! argh

Im waiting to hear back re: my disability and hope to be out of commission soon!

Re: Who Commutes to NYC?

I love it when the people sitting on the trains ignore and pretend to not see a pregnant person on the train. They act like the freaking seat is golden that they can't give it up.

Yeah or they're "sleeping" or they have their nose stuck in a newspaper - pretending not to see you.
