who else hates being in the house alone at night? what do you do to cope?
THIS is when I wouldn't mind a gun.
Do you ever realize how loud your home is when the ice cube machine starts making new ice?
make me feel better.

Re: who else hates being in the house alone at night? what do you do to cope?
wow, palin has a nice bod!!
im a nervous nelly, i HATE HATE HATE to be home alone, especially at night.
we have an alarm system that i ALWAYS have on when im by myself..
i also have a bat under my bed, my cell phone and house phone next to my bed along with my car keys. (in case i have to hit the panic button)
i watch tv, go online, talk on the phone.. anything to keep myself busy. i usually get a friend to come over if i know im going to be alone.
good luck!

Re: who else hates being in the house alone at night? what do you do to cope?
Its so funny you ask this because last night i was home alone (DD was sleeping) and i was totally freaked out. Dont know if it was all the scary movies i've been watching or the wind but i was sooo nervous. DH is a cop in the city so he works nights every other week and usually i'm fine but last night i literally almost grabbed a knife to keep next to me while i slept because i was convinced a killer was after me!
On a normal day when i'm not feeling like a psychotic killer is out to get me, to cope i just make sure all the doors are locked and keep on lights. When i go to sleep i keep lights on too to make myself feel better...DH thinks im nuts but whatever...he has the gun i dont!

I don't have a fear of being alone and night.
I did when I first moved into my house.

Re: who else hates being in the house alone at night? what do you do to cope?
Odd that you asked this because I was home alone last night, DH had to work an unexpected shift at work and came home at 7am this morning. He's been on days for 4 years, so I've gotten used to him being home for the most part.
I've got 2 German Shepherds and a Rottie. I'm not terribly concerned about someone coming in the house. It's more that my sleep is off because I know he's not home, even in my subconscious. I do go to bed with the phone on the nightstand (in case he calls or I need to call him) and usually the TV is on. I also let one of the dogs sleep in his spot so it feels like there is someone there..yes, on his pillow too. LOL.

Re: who else hates being in the house alone at night? what do you do to cope?
I'm used to it. DH has been traveling for the last week.
Although last night, it sounded like someone was walking in my DD room on the baby monitor. That freaked me out.
There was also a weird noise when I was trying to go to sleep. happy halloween!
I like the fact that I have a large dog, it comforts me. He lets me know when someone is coming up the path and is on alert when it is just me at home.

Aww, that is sooo cute!
Unfortunately, I dont have any pets; if I did, I think I'd feel a little more secure.
But I Hate it. I make sure the lights stay on outside instead of turning off w/ the timer. I also leave some lights in the house on. I sleep; but its broken sleep....

You know, its funny...I think if I lived in a house, I would be completely afraid to be home alone at night. Dh and I live in an apartment in the city with a doorman and I feel safe with that. DH and I dream about owning a home someday, but then sometimes I feel like I could be happy in an apartment like ours forever too...just feels safer to me. I know my doorman is downstairs to make me feel safer...and he's just a quick phone call away if I need anything.

No, it doesn't bother me. At least not in the rational, fear of burglary sense. I have two giant dogs who would defend me. But when I watch a scary movie, like last night when I watched Legion, I freak myself out. I kept imagining the creepy little kid with the knife was standing at the edge of my bed.

Re: who else hates being in the house alone at night? what do you do to cope?
I moved out of my parents house and moved in with DH 4 1/2 years ago. He used to travel for work and I hated it. I wouldnt sleep and was terrified. We have an alarm and it even went off in the middle of the night when I was alone (from a faulty cable modem).
Now, 4 1/2 years later, he doesnt travel anymore but even if he is out late, I am not so scared anymore. I set the alarm, I have a dog and that is the best its gonna get. I have just learned to cope.

Re: who else hates being in the house alone at night? what do you do to cope?
Ugh I hear you! My DH works 5 nights a week so I have been sleeping alone ALL night most nights since we got married. In the beginning it was AWFUL. I would not sleep a wink until daylight broke. I couldn't even function at work. I finally got used to it- but I still have to sleep with the TV on and bedroom door locked and my cell near the bed. After awhile exhaustion takes over and you are ok. It stinks though I know!

Re: who else hates being in the house alone at night? what do you do to cope?
DH works nights.
I sleep with a fan on to drown out any noise (I have the monitor on to hear DS).
I got used to it quickly, I thought I'd be more scared in my house but, I'm not as bad as I was in our apartment where the cops used to come monthly for domestic disputes across the hall.

well, i had my 15 year old sister sleep over... not that a 15 year old would help me, but i just felt safer having her there!
If she does not sleep over, i will leave the TV on until i fall asleep

Re: who else hates being in the house alone at night? what do you do to cope?
I am used to it, but I don't live in a house, we are in an apartment building. I would probably feel completely different is I WAS in a house alone at night. We actually rent a house in PA every summer and being there alone is NOT a good feeling at all... One of the reasons I hope to NEVER live in a house: I feel completely exposed on all 4 sides...

Re: who else hates being in the house alone at night? what do you do to cope?
I don't love it but I have gotten used to it. When I lived in an apartment it didn't bother me at all. In my house I'm a little timid about it but feel the most comfortable with house alarm on. My biggest coping mechanism would be that I keep the house lit up like a xmas tree. I keep lights on throughout the house

DH is convinced this is why I'm such a scaredy cat - too many years with a doorman
I wouldnt move into my house until the alarm system was installed. I also insisted on having a keypad upstairs with the motion detetectors on downstairs. And even with that I'm still afraid someone can get around it

Dh works nights so i am usually by myself at night sleeping alone. i think after a while you get used to it, although i def like it when he has off and is able to sleep w/ me. just an extra sense of security.
ETA: i always leave lights on

I just double check the doors. I don't scare with that easily. ONLY if I hear something really out of the ordinary.
