Who here has DVR? how does it compare to TIVO?
Does it work the same way? My mom has TIVO and it notes what kinds of shows you like and records them for you.
Does DVR work the same way? Or do you have to program it all the way around?

You have to select the shows you want with DVR. I wish it did have that feature like TIVO!

I like dvr. I don't like that sometimes it misses the beginning and ending of the show sometimes.

I LOVED my TIVO. Its so much more user friendly, more options, etc etc. I use the DVR bc its all i have but i would chose TIVO over it ANY DAY

this is not the dvr's fault...its the station fault for not telling CV in advance what time a show will begin and end.
You can always set a 5 min buffer manually for shows that "tend" to run over over?
As for recommended recordings...
no...
You can record 2 shows at once while watching an already recorded show... (2 hd tuners, not sure what model tivo can do that)
Just pay monthly fee as to buying TIVO device, then either buying a lifetime membership or monthly fee...

We have TiVo ... on both of our TVs!  One box wasn't enough for us. We have them networked so we can transfer shows back & forth between rooms
I don't know about DVR, so I can't give advice on that ... but I do   TiVo

I have TIVO and I know all of my friends that have DVR are jealous of the functions of TIVO. They all have said that they would rather TIVO than DVR. I think DVR does record more for a cheaper price. But TIVO offers a lot more. I love that we can group our shows together. You can't do that with DVR.

We have two DVRs. We had a DVR with DishNetwork before TiVo came around. Our most recent DVR has 350 hours of standard TV recording, and a USB port so we can use any external USB hard drive, and have unlimited storage. We can even have one drive for each person, or each type of recording if we want.
I actually like the fact that my DVR doesn't try recommending other shows for me. I know what I want, and I don't want a box trying to make guesses about what I'm interested in. I watch too much TV as it is.....

I have two TiVos and a DVR from Cablevision.
The DVR is nice for a couple reasons:
Records two things at once, and I like that you can "manage" the DVR while watching the show - meaning that you can see the menu and still watch what you recorded.
Plus, The DVR is in HD, TiVo is not yet (at least not the ones I have, I do know they are out there).
But for searching, scheduling and recommendations, TiVo can't be beat.
I get really frustrated trying to find programs to schedule on the DVR and I do find that it's missed things every now and then.

I dont have TIVO...but I LOVE my DVR!!! I cant believe I ever lived without it. I just set up what shows I want to tape and it does it for me....magic!!!

We recently switched from Tivo to the DVR because it was connecting properly anymore. I miss my Tivo DH makes the little sounds Tivo used to make when I press the Dvr buttons to make me feel better

I have both a tivo and a comcast dvr
tivo comes in HD now and you put two tv tuner cards in - so can record two shows at once - but no on demand caalitites with tv tuner cards - but don't need an extra box
tivo is more user friendly, can't by accident delete a wrong show - adds time to live shows- keeps two weeks of programming guide and has a better update list - can download movies and shows from amazon directly to the tivo box - can set up to record shows through your computer when you are not home
the dvr box we have is HD and has two tuners so records two things at once - but the box locks up constantly and is hard to search - but it is cheaper then buying another tivo box
we are going to try comcast's tivo service and see if we like it - if not i will buy another tivo box -the comcast dvr is getting terrible

It doesn't do that- that is the main reason why I LOVE Tivo and HATE the DVR
Tivo can just do so much more and is SO much more user friendly
