It is soooo easy. All you need is a steamer basket, a large pot, and a food processor or some people use a blender I think.

Funny though, there were some things that Sydnie preferred from a jar Chat Icon

I do. I have the williams sonoma beaba and I love it. It is expensive, but it kind of gets rid of the need to have a bucnh of separate appliances.

So far I have found it very easy and I enjoy doing it. I am not sure how cost effective it is when buying organic fruits though.

I made DS's baby food - what seems like ages ago - I loved doing it. Very easy - a little makes so much and it was fun to do. I was happy to have tried it.

I do sometimes. I made a boatload of it then realized that making it with butter was not too bright when you have a kid who doesn't eat dairy. Oh well. Im giving it to someone!

I did with foods that I couldn't find in jar form (avocado, broccoli, cauliflower, etc) Super easy. Steam, and blend adding water from the steam pot as needed for consistency.

I find it is not really cost effective at all when buying organic fruit. I just bought a bunch of frozen organic veggies, which is a lot cheaper than the fresh, so I am going to make that into food.
I haven't had much luck in finding frozen organic fruit though.

You can find frozen organic fruit at Trader Joe's, however, according to Super Baby Food, the book I used, it advises no citrus fruit or berries until 12 months old.

It is VERY easy if you batch cook or when you are cooking for DH and yourself, take whatever veg you planned on serving, steam some, let it cool, puree, pour into ice cube trays, freeze for 24 hours and then empty into a freezer bag, label the veg and date it. It can last two months in the freezer. Same goes for meat, just cook a small chicken cutlet in chicken brother and chop into fine pieces.

It's A LOT easier than most think and it's even easier this time of year because fresh fruit is so readily available. Freezing fruit for baby food is more involved.

Items that you can serve w/o cooking:

bananas, mash with fork... for younger babies, puree.
Avacado, mash with fork... younger babies, pureee.

Just about any fresh fruit, cut, mash, serve.

I also added wheat germ and flax seed for added fiber and Omega 3's

My kids were on all organic, home made baby food and it was a lot cheaper. I saved hundreds of dollars. I calculated the money we saved from making my own baby food, buying generic formula and buying a years' worth of diapers when Ekerd's was going out of business... and put the dollar amount into their 529's

It's all coming back to me now because I recently showed another twin mommy how to do this. She's never cooked in her life and she was amazed at how easy it was.

I made her peaches once, but I found it to be stressful. I had to make sure the peel was completely off and no pit remained...She liked it though.

I recommend the book Super Baby Food by Ruth Yaron. It gives you a month by month breakdown of what to introduce and how to combine food to balance out vitamins throughout the day.

Re: Who makes their own baby food?

I just started on fruits and veggies and I have been making my own.

It is so easy and you can freeze ahead of time and take out what you need.
