Who makes homemade carrot baby food?
I read that you're not supposed to make homemade carrot baby food because of the nitrates, but I also read that although baby food companies screen for nitrates, there is no law regulating whether they can/cannot use carrots that are found to have a high nitrate level.
Is this a serious issue or just a precaution? If you use organic carrots does that help? Do you still make carrot baby food or stay way from it?
TIA!!

I made it before I read about the nitrates...and she loves her carrots so much that I can't stop making them now!

I had heard the same thing, but my DS isn't eating solids yet. However, I was wondering if you used organic carrots if the risk is less. I haven't read that much on it yet.

I use organic carrots and DO NOT use the water I steamed or boiled them in to puree with. I boil water seperately and use that in the puree.

Did anyone ask their ped about this? I did and he looked at me like I had 10 heads - but for now I have been using earth's best - but I was going to start making organic carrots this week - just steaming them and not in the water so they won't absorb any of that - but not sure about the whole thing b.c a lot of other people I spoke to made them and never had an issue.

I actually did this morning. He looked at me like I had 5 heads or even more.... I made organic carrots this weekend.
He said it was fine.
I steam all the veggies anyway and use bottled water to puree them.

well the AAP also says that it's not necessary to feed your baby solids til 6 months...but not everyone does that either...so...you do what you feel if right for your DC

I do the same. I used this website to help make babyfood (yes I was that clueless ) and it tells you when to use the water and when not to.

Re: Who makes homemade carrot baby food?
On my pediatrician's website it says you should not prepare carrots, turnips, spinach, collard greens, and beets at home to avoid excess nitrates. I forgot to actually ask my ped about it when I was there last week. I haven't started solids, but when I do am I going to avoid making these veggies at home until I speak to my ped at the next appointment.

I do the same although I don't use a separate boiled water...I find that the carrots don't need any extra water (but maybe that's because we are passed the thinning out of foods stage)
So long as you don't use the water the carrots are fine...DS has never had a problem with them.
