Who read Running With Scissors?
I just finished it...what a wacky hysterical book. Some parts I laughed out loud on the train...
I heard its being made into a movie - some parts will have to be edited - lol!

Re: Who read Running With Scissors?
I did and I also read "Dry", the follow up to it. I liked it a lot. Even though it was bizarre and a bit disturbing, I was riveted through the whole book. That doctor is the reason I am sometimes skeptical of therapists and think you should have a healthy skepticism until you really get a feeling that they are good at what they do.
The Christmas tree thing killed me. How in the heck do you keep a live Christmas tree for so long???? I would be curious to know where the rest of the kids are now......

I read it too... it was pretty wild. I kept saying... Nah that didn't happen or no that can't be true! It's really crazy. The hole in the ceiling, them living outside on the lawn... woah.
I also agree that it does make you wonder about therapists.

I read it too - I love his sense of humor.
It is a movie now, coming out later this year I believe.
Gwenyth Paltrow and Julienne Moore are in it. I can't wait to see how they handle some of it.
I'm going to have to read it again because it's been so long.

Re: Who read Running With Scissors?
I have about 100 pages left. Everytime I think this book can't get any creepier...it seems to amaze me. I can't believe this was his life!!! I seriously re-read a line sometimes cause I can't believe it.

Re: Who read Running With Scissors?
Yep - Gwenyth is Hope, but apparently Julianne dropped out and now Annette Bening is playing the crazy mom.

The rest of the kids are currently suing Augusten Burroughs.
NY Times
I saw him do a reading of Magical Thinking last year - it was hysterical. Dry was one of my favorites.

Re: Who read Running With Scissors?
Running with Scissors: A Memoir by Augusten Burroughs - Kid's mom give him to her psychiatrist to raise. Major dysfunctional family and the kid that survives it with humor & a great attitude.
Dry - same kid working in advertisement goes into recovery. Same great attitude with funny stories.
Magical Thinking - collections of short stories. More like an ode to his long-term boyfriend but still very good.
Dry was my favorite.
From Amazon: It’s best to know this from the start: Augusten Burroughs is mean. Augusten Burroughs is also outrageously X-rated. If you can get past those two things, Burroughs might just be the most refreshing voice in American books today, and his collection of acerbic essays will have you laughing out loud even while cringing in your seat. Whether he is stepping on the fingers of little children or giving you the blow-by-blow on a very unholy act, Burroughs manages to do it in a way that fills conflicted fans with both horror and glee.
