Whose dog has had an ear infection
And how in the world did you put the medicine in their ear? Molly flips out when she sees us coming with the bottle. We have to give her two types of medicine. One isn't so bad because it's only a few drops - but one we have to put alot of the fluid in her ear.
I use the sneak attack on her when she is calm and resting for the drops - but we are having major issues with the second one.
She ends up freaking out and we miss her ear and something get her little face (luckily we haven't gotten her eye or mouth)
I am so worried because we are flying with her in a few weeks and I want this ear infection to be long gone by then.
I also called the vet and they don't have any pills that I can give her for this.

Re: Whose dog has had an ear infection
With us, it's a two-man operation. DH holds her down and holds her head still while I put the drops in. You have to stick the nozzle way down in there to be sure the medicine gets to the source of the infection (the brown crap you normally see in the ear flap is NOT the infection- just the byproduct of). THEN, DH continues to hold her while I massage the base of her ear to make sure the meds are spread around in there.
One both ears are done- we let her go and shake to her heart's content. Then we offer her a cookie.
We DON'T let her see us coming with the bottle either.

We do it together too - but she will literally - and I swear - bite the hell out of us. I am thinking of almost blocking her face with a pillow or something. I don't feel like we have ever really gotten it in the ear THAT good.

I distract Pyxie with a very long bully stick. While she is distracterd, DH puts the stuff in her ear & rubs it in.

I gave Holden a treat and held him while DH put the medicine in his ear & rubbed it in. Not fun but it worked.

Re: Whose dog has had an ear infection
Thanks everyone! It is so frustrating. We tried again last night after I posted and she just resists so much that she basically goes psycho on us - and we are worried that it will squirt in her face.
I'm going to try the sneak attack again today when DH isn't home - and hopefully I can get some more in.
Should I be worried about the ear infection and her flying on an airplane?

Re: Whose dog has had an ear infection
I have two dogs that get ear infections... at first Dh and I would hold Rudy down and put them in... than what happen was this began and traumatic event for Rudy (he would even bit at us)... so we changed our tactic.. I started to give Rudy massages, relax him, put the medicine by his nose while i gave him the massage.. I would do this for about 10 minutes... than I would continue to massage and put the drops in, afterwards I give him a treat. So now ear cleaning has become a fun event instead of this traumatic holding him down, yelling at him event.
Good luck.

Re: Whose dog has had an ear infection
Yea -- umm....Molly is so not into this at all. I tried the massage trick - didn't work. She makes things like this so difficult. I started to feel bad because I would sneak up on her when she was relaxing - and now when I go near her she jumps because she thinks I have something up my sleeve (which I normally do )
I'll just keep on trying!

Re: Whose dog has had an ear infection
My dog luckily is very good when it comes to ear drops. He's gotten a few through his 6 years of life. I think he actually likes the feeling - especially when we rub his ear afterwards. And he LOVES getting his ears cleaned...I seriously think he gets off on the feeling.

Re: Whose dog has had an ear infection
Can you get a muzzle that is specifically made for snub-nosed dogs? This way you guys can just concentrate on holding her down and not worrying about getting bit.
She's a wee little thing, so using the technique we used (ex. DH literally LAYS on Luna and holds wraps his arm around her head while holding her muzzle) probably won't work.
Maybe you could take her back to the vet and have them demonstrate?

I was thinking about getting a muzzle but I just feel so bad. I may bring her back to the vet because we will be in the area - the problem is - they have such a hard time with her too. They literally had 2 doctors and 2 helpers last time we were there. You would think she was 150lb dog!

Re: Whose dog has had an ear infection
I would not do a muzzle unless that is your last resort. It might make her have more issues with you approaching her face than she does now....
