why are pure breed dogs so expensive?
I dont understand this?
We have been looking at puppies for a few months or so...we want to wait, see if we get PG, but DH really wants a puppy...I cannot get over the prices?!?!
What kind of overhead does a breeder have to sell puppies for $2K?
I just dont get it?
Things is, I wouldnt mind a mutt , or adopting, but we live in an apt, so we are purposely looking for a small dog or something liek a bull dog that doesnt need a huge amount of excercise, huge yard, we only have a small one....So we dont see too many adoptions for them...
Can someone explain it?

Re: why are pure breed dogs so expensive?
If you buy a purebreed dog from a responsible breeder, they do comprehensive health tests on the parents and pups, trying to ensure healthy dogs. A good breeder will provide you with a health guarantee and a family tree of healthy dogs (oftentimes, this will include show dogs). The purebred pups also will fit into all the proper size, weight, confornment AKC requirements of the breed. It is a lot of money but well worth it!

Donna there was a great article in Newsday the other day about picking the dog that is right for you and your living situation -- and smaller is not always best for an apartment. I will try to find it for you.
No, no idea why purebreds are so $$$. I got Ebony from a breeder in Spain for $, but cheap compared to the US. Next dog will def. be from a rescue foundation, a shelter, or maybe the rejected guide dogs - they turn them away of they are not perfect for the job.

Re: why are pure breed dogs so expensive?
That's pretty crazy.
Molly was $800- she's purbread and has papers, but she isn't show quality, so wasn't that $$$ compared to a show dog.
A 2k dog should be a show dog- you should be able to find something for under 1k that is still purebred.

thats what I originally thought. We just happened to look at bulldogs recently, DH is DYING for one his whole life and the sedetary lifestyle fits our household but they were $2000 everywhere I looked, and this sounds horrible, but bulldogs have a lot of health problems that could happen, so Im adding possible frequent vet visits and a 10 yr life span into it and thinking W T F....
Thanks for explaining better everyone

Been looking at rescue foundations too...but their dogs seem to go FAST, and we wanted a puppy only because we have 3 cats and we are afraid of introducing an older dog into the mix where he/she may not be comfortable...

We are not going to be in the market for another dog for a looooooooooong time but next time around, I would def go through a rescue org. We had to be very careful because of DH's allergies and this is the first time either of us have had dogs. They are a lot of work but incredible joy!

It isn't just pure breeds that are expensive. A lot of the popular mixes, designer dogs or so called tea cups are OUTRAGEOUS....way more expensive than a purebreed. Whatever is hot...they charge$$$$
IMO itis best to find a reputable breeder and go from there..

Re: why are pure breed dogs so expensive?
If you are buying an AKC registered dog, you are paying for the family lineage of that dog and for "show" quality. Usually, if the dog isn't "show" quality, it is sold at a discount as a "pet" which will be stated on the AKC papers.
Be very careful when buying a purebred that isn't registered through the AKC. Breeders make up their own registries and pass them off as high quality breeds - which, sometimes they are but a lot of times there aren't. These other registeries are usually used by puppymills and irresponsible breeders so they can sell their puppies as registered and for a higher price then they may really be worth.

Re: why are pure breed dogs so expensive?
We had the same problem.
We went to NSAL a few times, but no one could tell us how big the puppies would end up being.
Plus, I refused to purchase from a pet store, so we just kept waiting and looking until we saw that Jess's Tinkerbell was expecting.

Re: why are pure breed dogs so expensive?
Okay, you can all think whatever you want of me but it has to be said. I never had a problem with people getting dogs from breeders, but honestly no matter how responsible one breeder may be, they are only part of the problem.
Donna, I too ONLY wanted a dog a certain size because of living in an apartment, and I have to tell you there are SO MANY options out there! I never wanted a cocker spaniel, but when we met JJ at the shelter, we couldn't resist.
There are so many small, medium, "hypoallergenic" dogs in the shelters, all it takes is a little patience.
I honestly feel like anyone who wants a dog should really seriously try to find a dog from a rescue or a shelter first. The thought of our awesome dog being put to sleep because someone wouldn't adopt him is just so ridiculous. We have a purebreed, with no problems, no health problems what so ever. He was only a year and half when we adopted him (he was a gift that someone I suppose did not want).
Anyway I should stop my ranting and get back to work...

the reason some of these dogs are in shelters are because of Backyard breeders and Puppy Mills.
I can see how THEY are issues and would never go to them for a dog...
But whether someone choses to buy their dog from a reputable breeder or adopt them from a shelter....IMO is entirely up to them...

**NOT TRYING TO CAUSE CONTROVERSY** Sorry, I wanted to put out a warning on my question I am only asking this because I really don't know the answer...
What differentiates a breeder from a puppy mill? Isn't the concept the same?

Puppy m ill is someone who takes dogs of the same breed but from the same family- mother son, father , daughter and breeds them- these puppies arent even 1 yrs old before they have puppies of their own, they are usually in small cages and are just used for breeding to make money.
a reputable breeder, the parents are on premises, no inbreeding, usually show dogs, have papers, AKC papers. Dont sell to stores, you have to go through a process before purchasing,( paperwork, home visit) forgot to add, has vet visits and shots.

I still really DONT understand the answer to my original question and was hoping this WOULD not be a thread about freaking puppy mills again, but I guess theres no avoiding it...
I think IMO...that breeders try to further a breed versus a puppy mill just trying to mke dogs and make money and thats all well and good, but I dont get why its costs $2K for a dog, I just dont get it. If they REALLY wanted to further the breeds why dont they make they more affordable for people?

They aren't the same AT ALL! Completely two diffenent things.
This website is very sad and upseting but it tells you about puppymills
www.puppymillrescue.com
Like I said in my other post, if you buy from a breeder, make sure the dogs are registered with the American Kennel Association.

Donna for that kind of money those parents BOTH better be champion dogs with papers and awards!!!!
My american bulldog both her parents are champion show dogs . I got her from Southhampton and she only cost me 1k. I have papers and everything, just unfortunately the AKC doesnt acknowledge them as a pure breed but the SHutzhound does- if I spelled that right.
go into that website http://topline.org/contents.html and Im sure they can help you too. My Abigail is in there too, . We didnt show her, we brought her to training but it was weird they were robots we wanted a pet.

Re: why are pure breed dogs so expensive?
totally agree, we got our boxer from the new puppy store in east meadow and he is so small, his teeth are small, I got his papers- if you want to call them that- he came from oklahoma and def taken away from his mommy too soon, Im just glad we got him out of there the pet store he was in this huge cage by himself and still till this day 2 yrs later he still doesnt bark much- Im sure they were yelling at him to shut up in the store, he was 3 months when we got him and I couldnt walk him for over a year in the day light cause his ribs stuck out so much Im sure someone would have called the aspca on me, he ate so much just wouldnt gain and vet said hes healthy so finally no bones sticking out!
