ITA. And in the end really the change does have to come from the top down. It is unfortunate for the dogs that are left in the pet store, but if the government would act on enforcing the laws more stricktly, the dogs is pet shops would be seized by the ASPCA & other enforcement branches & adopted out to good homes without the industry profiting.

I would have LOVED to have adopted a dog from a shelter, but DH wanted a Bull Terrier, and no shelter that I found had one.

We got Cooper from a pet store a little over 2 years ago. We wanted a dog, at the time we didn't have a preference and when we walked into the pet store we had no intention of even buying a puppy (truth be told FH was really upset about something so I thought I would take him to a pet store- like he was a 5 yr old- to cheer him up), but we left with Cooper and haven't regretted it once ever!
HOWEVER, with that said, we will NEVER buy from a pet store again and we were, for a while, working with the CAPS organization and the state attorney generals office to close this chain of pet stores (Shake-a-paw).
Like I said, we've have Cooper a little over 2 years and he is only NOW starting to lead the life of a healthy puppy... we spent thousand and thousands of dollars trying to get him healthy and stopped at NOTHING.
With all of that said though, there is a grey area... these puppies didn't ask to be put in a pet store, so what happens to them when no one will adopt them just because they wound up in a pet store... they'll get put to sleep and I'd rather adopt the dog than have it put to sleep.... see what I mean when I say it's such a grey area?
I'm just curious what all of the pet store nay-saying (I'm one of them too) have to say about that??
My story is pretty similiar. My STBX bought Angel as a birthday present for me from a pet store in Coram. He was pretty ignorant about the conditions and the circumstances behind pet store dogs but the night Angel came home, she was deathly ill. There was no way I was returning her to their care based on moral principal. I did, however, march into the store on a crowded Saturday morning and BLAST them for selling a sick dog. Many a patron was turned off and left. I can't count how many thousands of dollars I've spent on health related issues for this dog. I've saved over 20 cats throughout my lifetime from life on the streets and they didn't come close to the financial burden my pet store doggie cost us. So was it wrong for him to buy her? You bet. I wanted a Boston and he should have checked w/a breeder. Do I regret it? Not in the least. I feel like we "saved" her from a life with someone who wouldn't show her the dedication or committment we did or she could have been worse off (dead).

Re: Why do people buy dogs?
We bought our dog from a breeder because at the time we got him, we lived in a one bedroom apt. and could not chance that a mixed breed from a shelter would get too large. Nevermind the fact that we got a Jack Russell terrier whose temperments can be "if-y" so we wanted to go to a breeder who bred her dogs for health and temperment.

I just hope you sleep great at night knowing how many deaths you cause as a result of your "opinion" i am done with you with this topic. it seems to me there is just no getting through.

oh and you're not stubborn at all. not to mention, at this particular moment - disrespectful and nasty. no need for it. no need. we all come on these boards to share ideas, thoughts, opinions, viewpoints, get advice, support... to make friends. no one's opinion should be shoved down someone else's throat to the point of being nasty and that's exactly what you are doing. i don't come on these boards for this crap. i don't agree 100% with you and i'm okay with that. apparantly you're not. fine by me. but still no need for what you just wrote. i too, am done with this.

Re: Why do people buy dogs?
I got my pup from the shelter, but you can't always get purbreeds, or small dogs for that matter. Plus the shelters aren't always knowing what kind of mix a dog is and sometimes just guess and are completely wrong my friend adopted what they told her was a jack russel begale mix they told her the dog would grow to be about 40 pounds. Her dog is 75 pounds there is no way she is a Jack russel- begale mix she lloks to me to have some kind of pit/boxer/mastiff in her.
I know people go to breeder so they know what they are getting. I don't think people always think of the rescue groups for diffrent breeds as much.

Re: Why do people buy dogs?
Just a little FYI about buying from a petstore...just because you think you have bought a purebred, you usually have not. Their bloodlines are usually compromised in some way, usually a small way. You can't get legitimate papers for them because there has never been any genetic testing and/or they breed siblings. You have no idea what a petstore dog with grow up to be.
Prior to being educated on the subject, we bought a JRT from a very popular petshop on LI. I love him to death but his bloodlines are not good. He's about 10lbs bigger then he should be and not because he's overweight. So my little dog is not so little.
My point...even if you think you are buying the breed you want...there is no way to be sure of that.
Also, about 25% of dogs in shelters are purebreds.

Jess- while it's admirable the way you defend your convictions- please understand that opinions are NOT usually based on facts.
I agree with your stance on puppymills, however, you catch more flies with honey- your approach tends to turn some people off, which kind of defeats the purpose. Try to remember that we have ALL been uneducated about this subject at one point- and most of us have unknowingly contributed to the puppymill/BYB problem at some point as well.
Mrs. Kelly- while I appreciate your opinion that the pet store animals need homes too, it IS true that with a decrease in demand, there will be a decrease in supply. If everyone would stop buying from pet stores, the puppymills will have to go out of business. Additionally, if everyone would stop buying from unlicensed "breeders" the same thing would happen....
Once someone knows about what goes on between pet stores and puppy mills, there really is no excuse for ever buying from there again....

Re: Why do people buy dogs?
I never understood this either!! There are thousands of puppies that have no homes and are FREE! I dont think people really think about it enough when they WANT a certain TYPE of dog. We got our pup from a rescue!
YEAH for those who ADOPT!!!!
