why do so many babies have reflux today??
my in-laws got me thinking about this. They had 5 kids and said the docs used to tell them to add rice to bottles for babies who spit up alot but none were ever medicated or diagnosed with reflux and none seemed so uncomfortable. I think they worry because DD gets medicine for hers and it seems that so many babies get it these days. I wonder why its so common?

My DS has it too, and a lot of people I talk to have had babies with it in the past few years.
It just seems like kids get all sorts of stuff nowadays that didn't happen when we were little..?

Re: why do so many babies have reflux today??
I think because it is diagnosed more and people are looking for it. My mil always tells me thats just a little spit up, its normal. My bil is 25 and he spit up a lot, the dentist says you can tell he had acid reflux by his teeth.

My brother too. He was hospitalized again when he was an infant b/c he couldn't keep anything down and was severely dehydrated. They never called it reflux, they just told my parents he had a "sensitive tummy" and that they should add rice to his bottles and put him on soy formula.

Re: why do so many babies have reflux today??
My DD never spit up, but was diagnosed with reflux during a visit to an ENT for an unrelated issue (laryngomalacia). She was placed on Prevacid for it (which made things worse in my opinion...that's when she started to spit up.)
I should also state she was a tummy sleeper from very early on and that didn't seem to help her reflux or laryngomalacia any.

Re: why do so many babies have reflux today??
I'm convinced that anything back in the day that dr's didn't know what it was=excessive crying, spit up, they labeled it COLIC.
If you read about colic, alot of the fussiness, crying without being able to be consoled, crying without reason-all point to acid reflux symptoms.
You also dont' have to have a spit up baby and have acid reflux.
My 1st wasn't a spitter at all, my 2nd was a big spitter, both have/had acid reflux.

I think they also wrote off some of it to "fussy time" the witching hour etc.

Re: why do so many babies have reflux today??
According to an article in this months American Baby Magazine most babies diagnosed as having reflux or GERD dont actual have a case that requires medication.
According to American Baby...All infants spit up to some degree and b/c infants are on an all liquid diet and liquids back up more easily most babies will spit up..Also, babies spend a lot of time on their back, and the opening between their esophagus and stomach hasnt fully matured, so food can splash back..
According to the magazine..while the spitting up is annoying and bothersome if your child is gaining weight appropriately, he's absorbing more milk than he's losing and doesnt require treatment...

I read that too and the same thing my PED told me. But he went on to say, that the MEds make it less painful when stomach acid backs up when baby spits. All babies have reflux, but not all babies are in pain when they spit up. My 2nd was a big spitter and the meds did nothing to help the spitting up, but when the river came pouring out, she wasn't screaming for an hour after that and screaming for 4 hours straight at bedtime. And my poor DD has silent reflux, she NEVEr ever spit up, and meds made her a different baby.

Re: why do so many babies have reflux today??
ita with what everyone has said....
the other thing that my ped told me is that i should never have her flat on her stomach - with the exception of changing her or when he sees her and is examining her.
that i should always have her @ a 30 degree angle when laying down.
i have a wedge pillow in her bassinet to keep her elevated as she sleeps.

Yes, this is what I was taught as well. As long as they are not in pain when they spit up, then they should not be on medicine.

In the magazine with this past Sunday's Newsday it said that ALL babies have reflux. It mentioned a review of 45 babies, of which 42 were on medication for reflux and only 8 actually needed it.

If this is true, it is true for us, my dd slept on her belly since day 1 and she never had a bit of reflux..

Re: why do so many babies have reflux today??
Weird timing - I just got back from the doctor for DS's 1 month checkup. He has been screaming blkoody murder for upwards of 7-8 hours a day, getting worse as the days go on. I never paid much attention to the spitup b/c in my mind, he's a baby and that's what babies do. The doctor was the one who brought up the reflux after DS spit up 2x in the short appointment (more than 1.5 hours after his last feeding) and blamed reflux. He changed his formula to enfamil ar, his feeding schedule to 3oz every 3 hrs and advised that he should sleep in the swing or infant seat as much as possible so he's propped up. Only if these things do not work in a few days will he prescribe zantac.
Fingers crossed it works - he's been sooooo miserable

Re: why do so many babies have reflux today??
I don't know why, but here in the UK we have very very few cases of reflux, I don't know anyone whose baby has had it. I wonder why that is...

I don't know if that is true. DS was spitting up profusely in the hospital before he every even got to sleep.
