why do you decline the flu shot?
please no drama, although i know that there will certainly be some regardless. but, i am very interested to know the reasons why some of you decline the flu shot? DD has her 1 year visit next week and i am sure the shot will be an option. i am leaning towards her getting it, as i am a peds ER RN, and I am exposed to the flu all the time. i have been getting the shot for 13 years with no complications. just wondering if there is info out there about the shot in kids that i don't know about. again, not looking to start drama, just looking for info! thanks in advance!

Re: why do you decline the flu shot?
I hadn’t received a flu shot in I don’t know how long. However last year I was concerned about getting it for DD. But after talking to the PED, dh and I agreed to give it to DD. Well she got the 1st dose and we were supposed to go back in a few weeks and get the 2nd part. Well we never went for the 2nd part. DD had a reaction; we ended up calling the PED and then calling the hospital and speaking to a nurse in the peds unit. But I didn’t like that she had a reaction and it bothered me. So long story short, I won’t be giving her the flu shot this year.

what kind of reaction did she have?

Re: why do you decline the flu shot?
me personally, I've never gotten the flu shot in my life and knock on wood, never have gotten the flu (and I was a smoker and not the healthiest person). I actually know more people who get "sick" who got the shot.
I'm preggo with DC #2 and will not be getting it for me or my son. DS is 2.5 and has never gotten it.
DH doesn't get it either and he is also relatively healthy (again knock on wood).

Our entire family gets their flu shots every year. I think that a lot of people choose not to get the shots because they have an irrational fear of vaccinations in general.

Re: why do you decline the flu shot?
I posted on the other thread.
I find it useless and unnecessary. I am not high risk and neither is my husband or child. It does not prevent the flu, just the severity of it. And then, only if the strain you get is the one you got in the shot and even then there’s still a chance of it being just as bad as if you didn’t get a shot.
I have not had the shot since I was very young. Never had a flu that's kept me on my butt for more than a few days.

Irrational fear of vaccinations?? I know you may be right for some and you weren't saying all.. but OMG that just cracked me up. Since *I* have no such 'irrational' fear. But I keep thinking of some random person saying "Oooooooooooooh NOoooooooooo another vaccination!"

mine is 100% NOT an irrational fear. Its the exact opposite. I think if I was "fearful" I would be getting the flu shot.
by the way, I'm 100% on board with vaccinations just NOT cool with the flu shot.

i really don't think people's concerns are irrational
i am just interested to know the reasons behind them, because maybe there is research someone has seen that i haven't. please don't

Re: why do you decline the flu shot?
I am "pro" vaccinnations in general but I prefer not to get the flu shot or have my kids get it. It's just an unnecessary shot in my opinion - the flu is rarely deadly. I only got it once in my life and it was the ONE time I got the flu that winter! Maybe a coincidence but whatever. My pediatricians put soooo much pressure on me to give it to my kids, it really annoys me.

Actually it is a completely ignorant statement obviously posted by someone who has no information at all on vaccines in general and specifically the flu vaccine. That is why a family chat board is not the best place to do your "research" on this issue, honestly. Myself, we do not get the flu shot. No irrational fears here
Here are just some of my many reasons ( I actually cut and pasted this from a thread I responded to like 3 yrs ago LOL):
1. My Aunt died from a reaction to a flu shot. 2. Studies have shown in recent years that the flu shot in this age group has not reduced hospital visits and doctor visits for the flu. 3. You can still get the flu. In fact, last year, DS had just started preschool and we did not get the shot. Well, two kids in his class that got the shot were out of school WITH THE FLU for 2 wks! And, their families as well (also got the shot). 4. My DS has had reactions to most shots he has received and my DD has not yet received any live virus shots. 5. The vaccine contains sooooo many chemicals and "junk" - to me it is not worth it since the benefits are just not that clear to me. I honestly don't really see too much if any proof that the benefits of this shot are even tangible. I think dying from the Flu is probably just as rare and dying from a reaction to the flu vaccine. I BF'd my DS and DD, give them all organic foods, etc etc. so why am I going to contaminate their for what I see as no real benefit.

Re: why do you decline the flu shot?
Honestly it's at a whim for me.
They never had it when they were younger.. but last year I allowed them to get it for the first time. This year I declined because the nurse didn't know if it was thimerosal free. I am - of course - wondering if I made the right decision.. especially since Robbie is on medication that can suppress his immune response. I guess we'll see..

The flu shot is no longer a live virus. Only the nasal one is. That is only given to kids over 8. People die everyday from the flu and it is 100 percent preventable. There is proof that it works and prevents diseases and hospitalizations in medical journals.
With that said I believe it is everyone's right to deiced what they want to do. My family will be getting the flu shot this season.

Re: why do you decline the flu shot?
Well I disagree with the statement that the flu is 100% preventable. The flu vaccine only protects against certain strains of flu that someone determines will be the most common that year, but it doesn't guarantee you won't get the flu.

I edited my post b/c I meant to write that DS has had reactions to most shots and all live virus shots.
The flu is not 100 percent preventable. That is just not true. If the flu shot guaranteed no flu this would be a different discussion entirely. There is also proof in medical journals that it does not always work and does not always work in this age range.

Re: why do you decline the flu shot?
My whole family and I will be getting the flu shot. When you look at the risk/benefit perspective based on SCIENTIFIC DATA there is really no question that the possible but EXTREMELY rare risks of a serious reaction to the flu vaccine (esp the one given to infants with killed virus) are far outweighed by the benefits of getting the flu shot.
Having personally taken care of children with severe pneumonia on a breathing machine, brain infections which caused permanent injury, and a few who unfortunately died from the flu I think it is silly not to vaccine. That's not to mention the scores of other children who needed medical attention and hospitalization but were not deathly ill.
I know my position is harsh and will ruffle a few feathers in the LIF world, but it's based on medical facts from trusted sources and personal experience.

I've taken care of seriously ill kids as well, those of whom have had the flu. which is why i will be vaccinating my dd. just wondering why the resistance, and if any research goes along with that resistance. I myself have not read anything bad about the flu shot. And yes, you can get the flu even though you get the shot. you still have to practice hand washing, and covering coughs, etc. it's not fool proof. But i certainly would not say that it's a useless vaccine. I have been sick with the swine flu, it was the year swine flu vaccine was limited, and i did not get it. i was sick as a dog. i could never imagine my DD getting sick with that!

You don't need to do research to see something "bad" about the flu shot. Just look at the product insert or the list of ingredients and side effects from the CDC. It's not a clear cut decision either way - there are positives and negatives on both sides. But, the fact that vaccines can have very dangerous and deadly side effects is very well known. The fact that they contain questionable and controversial ingredients is very well know. For me, with the other vaccines it is more clear cut b/c 1. they actually do prevent disease almost 100% of the time and 2. you don't have a choice anyway. With the flu shot I feel the benefits are limited - IF they get the right strain then you MAY not get that strain as severely For me - the "potential" benefit - and, for this shot that is really all there is - is not worth the actual risks.

So much for the OPs request to not start drama!!
I will b/c Im in that kind of mood tonight . Do I have an irrational fear of the flu if I don't let my DD play with kids who dont get the shot...Im willing to bet that MORE people die from the flu than from complications from the vaccine... at least keep your little Outbreak monkeys home from school when they get the flu!

Considering the CDC and other major academic medical societies recommend the flu shot I fail to see how it's not a clear cut decision. Please give data to back up the "questionable and controversial ingredients" from real medical sources....
