why does everyone hate to fail the 3 hour test?
honest question.
last pregnancy, i passed the first one, and never gave it much thought.
why does everyone hate failing? what do you have to do if you do fail, besides take it again?
i'm just curious , sorry if it sounds dumb.

Re: why does everyone hate to fail the 3 hour test?
Do you mean hate to fail the one hour? For me, it was just a big inconvience. I work in the city, so I ended up having to take a personal day because by the time I'd get in, it would be so late. Also, I don't do well with fasting and that's a long time to fast (and a lot of blood work) for a preggo. I actually felt a little sick half way through.
If you meant the 3 hr...like the pp said, it means you have GD and have to change your diet.

i knew it indicated GD, but how much do you have to modify what you eat? is it that bad?
I'm just curious because I have been eating so horribly this time.

for most people, it means severe dietary changes - you're on a very strict diet. GD can also be dangerous for the baby and cause preclampsia for Mom.

Re: why does everyone hate to fail the 3 hour test?
you're basically a diabetic for the rest of your pregnancy. you have to REALLY watch any carb intake--breads, fruits, a lot of drinks, and basically every meal. you also have to check your blood sugar a few times a day, and some women have to take insulin shots. it's just a huge lifestyle change.

Re: why does everyone hate to fail the 3 hour test?
You can end up on insulin for the remainder of your pregnancy. It isn't always controlled by diet. And it can make you have a BIG baby. And the baby's sugar can be all screwed up after delivery and end up in the NICU. When you fail the one hour, you have to take the 3 hour which is horrible for some people. It is more glucose to drink and can make you feel horrible. I threw it up 2 times and ended up having to take a different test which isn't as accurate. I developed GD in my 9th month.

Re: why does everyone hate to fail the 3 hour test?
Well GD would be the #1 reason.
I hated the 3 hour because I had to fast and I was STARVING the whole time lol. And because they draw your blood 4 times. I hate hate hate getting my blood drawn!

wow, thanks for all the info!
i felt silly asking but whenever I would go to find answers on the web, it got very technical sounding.
I hope anyone inflicted with this feels better and has a safe and sound pregnancy!

Re: why does everyone hate to fail the 3 hour test?
I have GD, had it with my first and now with my second. It is a BIG change. Not only did I have to modify diet, I also have to check my sugars 4 times a day. I am currently taking an insulin pill every night. I am considered high risk and have a LOT of doctor appointments in addition to my regular ob. I have to meet with diabetes nurses every few weeks to check my numbers, I have had to do 24 hour urine collection, frequent blood pressure checks, I had to go last week to a cardiologist for a EKG and and Echocardiogram for me and yesterday we went for an echocardiogram for the baby (there are a lot of things that can go wrong with GD). I am at a doctor every other week and as the pregnancy progresses, it only gets worse. I seriously am going to have to cut my hours at work....I have to start going for growth sonos and they told me once I hit the third trimester in about three more weeks, I will be in there every two weeks for growth sonos and eventually twice a week for monitoring. This all in addition to regular ob visits. It is definitely NOT fun. They take it very seriously when diagnosed, even more so when it is a second time around. All of it is worth it though and I am hoping everything with the baby is a-ok as it is showing to be so far. With DD, once the placenta was delivered I was fine within hours (they check your blood and baby's blood often after delivery). Hope that helps explain a few things!!
