Why is it okay to say the word "cracker"?
i think its alittle bit of a double standard.
why is the N word taboo but "Cracker" is not?
i personally dont think either is acceptable. but im just curious why one is ok whilst the other is not.

Re: Why is it okay to say the word "cracker"?
I def think it is racist, so I don't think it's ok to say it any more than it is ok to say the N word.

I do according to winikpedia. Is there a different origination?
Neither is acceptable to me. I think neither should be tolerated by censors.

Re: Why is it okay to say the word "cracker"?
i am unsure of their definition, but i was told by a black woman that it is what the slaves would call white ppl back in the day.... as in "cracking the whip"

Here's the other theory: The most common explanation for the origin of this phrase is that it is from corncracker, or someone who distills corn whiskey (cracking corn is to crush it into a mash for distillation).
More likely is that it is from an early sense of crack meaning to boast. This sense dates to the 16th century. A 1766 quote in the OEO2 gives the origin of cracker as boastful. (The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language)
Other theories

Re: Why is it okay to say the word "cracker"?
I am just thankful that not a lot of pop artists have felt the need to put it into their song lyrics as often as the N word is used
I actually got into a big debate with a co-worker about the useage of it
i find it all sooo demeaning and wrong

I agree!! I remember years ago - probably 1998 or 99 when Chris Rock hosted the MTV awards and he kept saying cracker this and that...I was really put off by it and one of my co-workers at the time thought it was funny.

Re: Why is it okay to say the word "cracker"?
I think what happens sometimes is that because of the horrid history African Americans have faced, we as a society tend to be more sensitive to racist issues facing them. And in some ways, you really cannot argue that. African Americans face much more discrimination even now that most white people can even imagine. Not saying using white-racist words is okay, just maybe trying to see why they don't bleep out some words and do some others

Re: Why is it okay to say the word "cracker"?
i just cannot understand why is it that a AA person can say the N word in comedy, in song and in general communication..
a AA can use the word cracker as well and it is deemed funny (as eroxgirl pointed out and i do rememeber the skits by Chris Rock)
BUT A WHITE person....well they are racist for every saying it .....EITHER of them
I personally think that NOBODY should be using such vile, demeaning words...And the fact that singers and comedians do sooo often is just sooo sad..

I find both words offensive and wrong but what daniela wrote is why i think its "acceptable" too.
Like we have black and hispanic history months because we feel "oppressed" here
but if there was white history month, many would be against it bc "whites" already have "everything going right for them".
NOT WHAT I BELIEVE BUT WHAT I THINK MANY FEEL.

Re: Why is it okay to say the word "cracker"?
either way...no matter who was "oppressed" or not..
BOTH words are very racist terminology and shouldn't be used
Jess is right though...there is a double standard...
shame on the media.. shame on the artists, comedians and people who use such terms
shame on our society and our teens for emulating what they see

What about the word "honky"? Honky are cracker are similar to me, but honky seems to be a little more acceptable....
