I am not supporting Admins making $600K as that is ridiculous, however when you complain about teacher salaries remember how expensive it is to live here! They wouldn't be able to make $40K on LI and still survive.
Many people who live on LI make that much or less and survive. Many don't know the difference between needs and wants, that is the problem.
Survive was probably a poor choice of word. You can probably figure out a way to live on LI for 40K a year however why should the people teaching our children who have advanced degrees have to live with just the basic necessities? Cost of living/where you live definitely should play into their salaries.
(Also I am not a teacher and many teachers make more $ than I do).
Many people have much more than basic necessities. Is it all about choices. This board is a good example of how people spend their money. Many don't find the need to impress with the services they employee or things they buy just because they have the money. I am sure I can stretch my dollar a whole lot more than someone who makes double the amount of money.
People spend money on their education for jobs that pay well. Just because someone could get by on a lower wage doesn't mean they should have to. I don't have an issue with how much teachers are paid, I think it's the administrators that are the problem.

Sorry, but it's robbery. Only on LI would an average civil servant make a higher salary than the president of the U.S. And that couple making $1M + pensions, and benefits?! THIS is why people are getting tired of funding the NY gravy train for a tiny piece of property with a decrepit house built on it and hightailing their assses out of NY at warp speed. Not only do NYers like to dress up their schools, but they also like to tell themselves they earn more in NY than they do out of state and that's simply not true anymore. Businesses are setting up shop where it's cheaper to operate. In certain industries, you can earn the same NY salary or higher, and with a lower cost of living and lower tax rate it's like getting an automatic raise.
Yes I have many family members who have relocated to different areas of the country (TX, SC, FL) with lower cost of living and they are still happy w/ the schools and the quality of education that their children receive. Their neighbors are also northern transplants. We are actually looking to leave in about 4 years and our parents plan to follow.

I have no problem with the salaries teachers earn. Most of them have multiple degrees and they have a difficult and important job. We would not be able to keep a quality caliber of teacher on LI if their salaries were low. It's too expensive to live here.
But something has to give with these administrators. And the custodians? WTH. And it's not just education. How is a PA sergeant earning almost $500k? How is one person permitted to work that much OT? How about the sergeant of Lloyd Harbor? Seriously. How hard do you think that guy works? They probably respond to people tripping their alarm systems all day; maybe get excited over a domestic dispute.
And what are these associations? Association of Towns? What the hell is that?
You know where they could save some money? Stop doing buy outs for unused sick and personal time. Use it or lose it. Just like the rest of us.
Lloyd Harbor is a bad example. I posted awhile back that we were thinking of moving-and that’s actually where we were going to move (had an accepted offer before we backed out for multiple reasons). They have their own police funded by village taxes, and you can text the dang cops if you need to. I guarantee nobody there is complaining about the salary of their cops. The taxes are super high there, but you do get a lot for them.
My in-laws live in Lloyd Harbor and there are definitely a good amount of residents that have big problems with the police salaries. A few years back they were paying overtime to officers that were on vacation...it was a huge deal. Lots of corruption and nepotism in that department.

Oh that’s crazy! Everyone we spoke to raves about living there, and how helpful the police and village services were. Thanks for the insight! We’ve decided to stay put for now, but aren’t closed to moving there in the future. We love the area!

Re: Why NYS is in trouble...
This was one my gripes on the post I made about the budget passing. It’s insane how much superintendents make and my district has several assistant ones and deputy one why???
Such a waste of tax payers money!!

This. You can definitely survive and not be miserable either! Trust me, it's my life. I also did not grow up with all the extras in life that people think are standard now.

I don't think $40k would be reasonable, but I think that $80k would be. Especially with opportunities to increase your salary by coaching, tutoring or working over the summer. I also don't think that the monetary demands made on teachers is acceptable... All of these masters credits for courses that seem more like busy work than things that truly enhance teaching ability and having to pay for so many supplies for your classroom.
But if you max out at 80k, what do you start at?
I honestly don't think 40k is a bad starting salary for someone just starting out. I have a civil service job. I started somewhere around there and there's a salary cap. Most jobs ive had started around 40-45k. It's enough to get by at first and be comfortable within a few years with reasonable yearly raises...

Don't be snide. This is not a teacher bashing remark. I also don't think teachers should be required to carry a masters. I have a bachelor's degree and am doing fine. Btw social workers are required to have a masters and make nowhere near what the teachers are making.

I interpreted it as being snide but perhaps it wasn't. I just don't see the need for teachers to have a masters degree. The school social workers who also work their butts off have to have masters degrees. They need to keep doing training too to keep their license as well but are making far less in comparison to the teachers (not that they are doing terrible, but the teacher's salaries are astronomical in some of these districts.) I don't see anythinf wrong with capping teacher's salaries around 90k, but i think the real issues is the superintendent salaries. There's a no reason for the superintendent of rocky point to make over $500k. They have i think 4 schools in the entire district. Ridiculous.

Re: Why NYS is in trouble...
In my district the teachers are negotiating some sort of concessions. I asked my superintendent if they give up something now will they be entitled to what they gave up in the future and I got no real answer. He said thats between the teachers and the board the public is not involved.
He never mentioning giving up part of his salary only they won't hire more administrative positions until this ends.

Typically if teachers give something up they do not get it back. The district is most likely giving the teachers something to make up for the concession.

The social workers that work in the district I teach in are on the same salary scale as the teachers and get paid the same amount.
