really think they can successfully ask for over 50% of today's retail price? I might as well just go buy it new then.Chat Icon Chat Icon

I know just what you mean. I see it on Craigslist or eBay all the time.

The ones I like on Craigslist are the Free board posts for people who have shrubs, rocks, trees, firewood, etc. They talk up the stuff and then they say - yours for free if you dig it up. Chat Icon

Just because an item is used, doesn't mean it is only worth half its value new.

I am looking for a Wii and even used Wiis are selling for almost as much as a new one.

I'm looking at an outdoor children's item that is a couple years old and I'm not paying over 50% new retail for it. The highest I would go it 33% of retail.

Then why buy used? If it's almost as much as a new one, why risk the "unknown" of a used one?

I guess the same reason why used cars don't sell for half the price of a new one.

It's cheaper. Some people are all about the dollar amount. I suppose Wiis don't really break down that often. No idea.

Used items are worth what people are willing to pay for them.

Sometimes, like with a Wii, the new ones are out of stock ... so if you want it NOW, you pay the price for a used one

I have to say I did that on the community board for my neighborhoodChat Icon

We had a ton of rocks that the old owners used for decorative borders around flower beds. I called 4 landscapers trying to pay someone to take them and no one would call me back once I told them what I needed.

I posted the free rocks thing as a lark and everyone of those rocks is now goneChat Icon Chat Icon

The price of any item is really dictated by what someone is willing to pay for it.
When i sell something on ebay.. i'll always search and see what other similar items are going for, then i know how much i can realistically expect for the item.

Some people do not want to sell for less than a certain amount, and so they post the price they think its worth. If no one buys it, then they'll realize that the 'value' of the item has to be reduced. However if someone does buy it at the price they have listed, then that item truly is 'valued' at that price.

I am the opposite. I sold a brand new LeSportsac Diaper bag for 49 bucks the other day. I had no idea it was worth so much. Should have done my research!Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Why, oh why, do people selling their used items

I am all for selling stuff for $$ and I think I am reasonable in my "expectations". But why would I buy an outdoor slide for my kid that you see someone selling for $50-60? It's faded, you can see the kids are about 8-9 years old when you go to the seller's house. It's $120 new. And with a 20% off coupon it's less than $100. IT'S NUTS!

I have bought new things with discount/coupons just $20-$30 more than stuff on CL that was YEARS old and used.

Some people need a reality check.

I would NEVER buy anyone used merchandise for close to as much as the new price. Saving a few bucks does nothing for me. I'd rather it be new then. I agree with you Morgan, For me it would have to be 50% or more off the orig price.

Re: Why, oh why, do people selling their used items

i've seen a lot of things trying to be sold on the parenting board that are years old and about 20-30% off. i could get it brand new with a 20% off coupon for the same price.

people often think their used items are worth what you would pay for a new one because they may look clean. regardless of how they look, they are used and i personally won't pay more than 50% of the original price for a used item.
