Will you/did you/Do you take nicknames into consideration when Choosing a name?
For a boy we want Jack Ryan.
I HATE the nickname JR.
Will you/have you taken nicknames into consideration when choosing a name?
IF so, did you toss the name cause of it?

Re: Will you/did you/Do you take nicknames into consideration when Choosing a name?
DH and i definately considered the nickname factor BUT i also think that if there is a name that u love but not the nickname - u should still use the name - if anyone says it - correct them early on.
if i was having a boy i wanted Dominic John and i HATE DJ!!!! but we were still going to use it and i would have just made sure no one started calling him that.
but we are having a girl and using Isabella but i LOVE the nickname Bella.

I thought of nicknames too...and DH pointed out that we could ultimately decide that as well. If we decide on a nickname and use it then chances are others will too...plus if they use one you don't like...you can always say something in a joking manner and they should get the hint. Even the whole let's not confuse him/her with too many names.

I thought of nicknames too - Love the nickname Maddie and since we are having a girl we are considering Madelyn for her name.

Re: Will you/did you/Do you take nicknames into consideration when Choosing a name?
I'm not a fan of nicknames since I don't like the ones that go with my name.
We have thought of that.
Actually, one of our names is the shortened form of a traditionally longer birth name but still a name in it's own right. We will be putting the shortened form on the birth certificate.
I have thought of the JD, DJ, PJ, and all other combinations for a boy. I guess that might be a reason why I tend to prefer middle names that start with a vowel.
I've had students that will ask to be called the nickname and students that insist on being callled the fullname. I always ask and I always tell my students they should be vocal about what they want to be called.
Now, I know where I get it from. I think my parents weren't into nicknames

Re: Will you/did you/Do you take nicknames into consideration when Choosing a name?
My family and friends seemed to have so many made up nicknames that it didn't matter that my given name didn't have many nicknames. I don't know if you can really control it......

Re: Will you/did you/Do you take nicknames into consideration when Choosing a name?
Our favorite names can't be shortened so we aren't worried about it. If there was a nickname for a name we liked, we'd just correct people.
My brother's name is Daniel. My mom absolutely hated the nickname "Danny" and would correct anyone who called him that. It's "Dan" or "Daniel". My grandma (her MIL) was the only one who would continue to call him that but I'm sure she only did that to irritate my mom.

Re: Will you/did you/Do you take nicknames into consideration when Choosing a name?
I did with girls names. My neice is name Sophia Harper, but her parents wanted to name her Harper and I was like, "Um, people are going to call her Harp, or Harpie or Harpo, bad idea"
We are having a boy and he is going to be named after DH, but he will actually be a 3rd, so we are considering Chip or Trey as nicknames if need be.

We want to use Vincenza for a girls name and everyone is saying that people will call her ENZA......I hate that "nickname"
so, I said if we NEVER call her that and make sure people dont call her that, it will never stick
basically, dont let the nickname get in the way of the name you want

absolutely.....
that's why we picked Alyson....we love Aly P. as her nickname.
With Jack Ryan you can easily avoid JR as a nickname. Just don't have anyone START calling him JR

Re: Will you/did you/Do you take nicknames into consideration when Choosing a name?
Yes we take that into consideration. I prefer more formal names, I personally don't like names that sound like they are short for something. Like my FIL's name is just Joe and I always thought it was short for Joseph until we were planning our wedding.
I think it will be on the individual to set the tone in how they want to be called. At work, I prefer to be called Stephanie. When people ask, I tell them. If they automatically call me Steph, I correct them. Only DH and my close friends call me that. My family calls me Stephie.

I have thought of it some, but I think it can be avoided a friend named their son Andrew, but hates Andy, so she calls him Andrew or Drew and everyone follows suit

BUT I LOVE ENZA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! She'll be my neice so I can call her whatever I want!!!!!!! Just kidding, if I have to call her something else, I will, but I won't be happy about it...
We definitely think about nicknames (at least I do). I like girls names that can have boy nickmanes, like:
Danny for Daniela (my fave) Sam for Samantha but I don't like Mel for Melissa, but I love the name.
Boys are a whole 'nother story......we don't agree and Jen took my boy name!!!!! I guess she can because it's her DH's name!!!!

Re: Will you/did you/Do you take nicknames into consideration when Choosing a name?
I have this irk about nicknames for my own name, jeez even my family still spells it wrong!
When we picked a name for DD, I fell in love with Gianna, and all the nicknames that could possibly go with it.
Lots of names were tossed because we didn't like the nicknames.
Ryan will be the middle name if we have boy, so hopefully if i don't call him by his whole name nobody will then shorten it to JR.
But i am not sure if that's a risk I am willing take just yet!

A good friend of ours named their baby Jack Ryan and no one calls him JR. If you don't I don't think many people will......

Re: Will you/did you/Do you take nicknames into consideration when Choosing a name?
my son has initials that could be used as a nickname, but no one has put it together. His first name shortens and we planned on using the shortened name, my mother swore she would never, but loves it now. It's what ever you put out there.
When I was in HS/College, people would just shorten my name to "El" - but it was just b/c one syllabel is easier than 3...LOL

My friend's daughter is Madison - they call her Maddie - just to give you another idea.

People keep saying Ava Nicole, even though DD just goes by Ava. I guess you can't stop them, but if he is always introduced as just Jack...I wouldn't forsee a problem...
DH calls his cousin Jack, "Jackie" and his friends and family do too but his wife HATES it and always refers to him at John. The family was there first, so they continue to say Jackie

I do this all the time, I even would see what I would say when I was yelling at him/her as a teenager. I want to choose a name that can def be shortened. I love when they can become one syllable nics. We have a friend named Alicia and we call her "Leesh"

Yes and No. there are names I love but I don't like the nicknames so if we had chosen them we would have not allowed the nicknames. My brother James has NEVER been a Jimmy so I know it can be done.

We are definietely taking nicknames into consideration. Our two option are Tyler Joseph (TJ) or Lucas Joseph (Luke or LJ). Either one we both love, just have to pick one.
