Re: Will you/do you allow a computer in your childs room?
No, Dh and I had decided before we got pregnant with Sarah no tv, phone or computer in kids rooms. Dh had a tv and phone in his room, as did his brother and he hated that his family never ate or hung out together. Everyone took their food into a separate room and did their own thing each night.
My brother and I were not allowed a phone or tv in our rooms. We had dinner together as a family every night and now we are very close, and we are both very close to my mom.
Not saying it was just the tv and phone thing, but Dh feels very strongly that it was a big part of why his family isn't as close as mine is. We did agree that if they need a computer for school work (writing essays, etc) they could have one that's not hooked up to the internet, but all the internet access for everyone will be in our family room.

we don't have children yet, but we both agreed when we do, no computer, no tv in the child's room, they will always be in a common room.

Re: Will you/do you allow a computer in your childs room?
As a teacher, and seeing what these kids put on MySpace, I could never ever let my kid have a computer in his or her room.
Even with parental controls, kids spend HOURS figuring ways to hack into stuff.

No, and I really hope I can stand firm on that when the time comes. I didn't get to see Oprah's show but I read the story on her website. So so sad....
Is this the perverted justice that someone mentioned? I thought I saw the Dateline show... but this seems different. I don't know which is scarier.

Re: Will you/do you allow a computer in your childs room?
don;t know. I had a computer in my room since I was 10 years old..that was before the internet (haha I feel like an old fogey..back in the days before the internet)...but as a teenager and preteen I did use the computer to have conversations and explore things my parents probably woudn't have approved of. it gave me a huge degree of privacy, and i think kids can get into a LOT of trouble like that..I didn't, but it definitely exposed me to a lot that I woudnlt have otherwise been exposed to. I think I'd probably keep the computer in the living room, but I wouldn't police the kids about it, if that makes sense.

Re: Will you/do you allow a computer in your childs room?
This show made me really angry. First of all child in my opinion he should not be blaming everyone else for his actions. Yes, he was 13 at the time and in my opinion he did know the difference between right & wrong. I understand the seduction that goes on, but he did this over & over again. Afyter the firts trip he gets molested and sexually assaulted by a random man & then he does it again....many times. There is something wrong here. I think the parents gave him too much liberty, what kid travels to Vegas at the age of 15 all alone??? That is just insane.

His father DID supervise him... he supervised him having sex with different people on camera! That part made me sooooooooooooo sick and so angry! Seriously, your kid tells you this is what he's doing and you as a parent turn around and ask what can WE do to maximize your money making? SICK, SICK, SICK!

Didn't it say his FATHER actually helped him build his "business" when he went to Mexico to live with him for a while?!!!
I'd have to say at this point, no, if I were to have kids, I don't think I'd let them have internet, at least, in their room. What a friggin scary world we live in!!
BTW - Marymoon - just imagine all of us here who didn't have the internet (besides maybe vaxing) in College!! "I remember back in my day..."

I think he realized it was wrong, he was very cooperative giving his records to the authorities and he went on Oprah so that this didn't happen to other kids...I think he definitely had remorse.

That show was really scary & shocking & just sick. It reaslly is sick what these people do. Have you guys checked the myspace sites? kids who lie about their age post on there and there are so many pictures, many of them wearing practically nothing.

I think that this has a lot to do with the breakdown of open and caring communication between kids and their parents... their are way way too many parents now that don't take an active role in their childs life... it's sad!

I def. agree with you on this. I also think many parents are trying to be their kids friends. I plan to be my daughter's friend of course, but first and foremost I am her parent.
