Re: Window tinting for your car?
Keep in mind that it's illegal if you go too dark on the side windows
http://www.tintcenter.com/laws/NY/
Windshield Non-reflective tint is allowed on the top 6 inches of the windshield. Front Side Windows Must allow more than 70% of light in. Back Side Windows Must allow more than 70% of light in. Rear Window Any darkness can be used.
Yes, I know a lot of cars have dark tint, but just be aware that it IS illegal....

nope not what I said but the tint I'm getting is not illegal, and IF I should get pulled over for it, there is a thing called courtesy, espically when I haven't done anything wrong.

i think it's great that you aren't getting illegal tints, but i think maybe you gave the impression that if you did get the darker tints, you wouldn't get in trouble b/c DH is a cop.

Re: Window tinting for your car?
Just so you know. When I got my car tinted the person told me that any tint to the front windows is illegal. The factory tinted glass is the only think that is legal and the visibility on that is very high. As for the back and side windows you can go as dark as you want it's just the front two windows that he said make it illegal. So if you're getting tint it's illegal.

Re: Window tinting for your car?
I looked up the paperwork to get an exemption from the law. It is taken from the DMV form.
"The front windshield and side windows on both sides of any vehicle operating in NYS must allow at least 70% of any light to pass through. The rear window may allow less than 70% of any light to pass through if the vehicle has mirrors on both sides that can be adjusted so the driver has a clear view of the road and traffic conditions behind the vehicle. The rear side windows of any station wag, sedan, hardtop, coupe, hatchback or convertible must also allow 70% of any light to pass through. "
It appears that even the rear windows must be 70%. It is the first time that I have heard this but the factory tinted glass on my trailblazers rear doors are illegal then. I haven't been pulled over for my tint in any of my cars. I think you will be fine as long as you don't get it too dark. Even then if they want to pull you over for something they have an easy way to do it.
ETA: Watch out if you go with too dark of a tint. It's a PITA to see outside of the windows at night. The reverse lights just don't throw enough light on my cars to illuminate when the windows are tinted.

Re: Window tinting for your car?
I found info from the NY DMV:
http://www.nydmv.state.ny.us/forms/mv80w.pdf
The form to fill out to request an exemption to the NY tint laws. The beginning of the form lists the legal limits of window tint in NY.
The front windshield and side windows on both sides of any vehicle operating in New York State must allow at least 70% of any light to pass through. The rear window may allow less than 70% of any light to pass through if the vehicle has mirrors on both sides that can be adjusted so the driver has a clear view of the road and traffic conditions behind the vehicle. The rear side windows of any station wagon, sedan, hardtop, coupe, hatchback or convertible must also allow 70% of any light to pass through.
Since this is coming from the NY DMV, I'm taking this to be the rules, and not what any police officer, tinter, etc thinks is OK.
I'm pretty sure both of my vehicles have an illegal amount of tint on the windows from the factory... the rear side windows are much darker than 30% tint...
ETA: you beat me to it, Sean.... I was looking up the info as you posted it...
