Winter coats and car seats
Last winter DD was in the infant seat so she didn't have a coat- just a posh pouch type thing over the seat and if it was really cold I'd put a blanket in there with her.
This year I had to get her a winter coat and it's kind of bulky- will this be an issue with the car seat? I know you aren't supposed to have too much padding between them and the seat etc etc. But in reality, they obviously need coats in the dead of winter.
Just wondering if it's going to be an issue...

Re: Winter coats and car seats
I missed the Posh Pouch last winter too.
DS wore a fleece most of the winter in the car last year since I kept it pretty warm and he wasn't outside for long when we got to our destination. I also put a hat on him.
I got him the 3 in 1 from Children's Place so I used the whole coat for him just to be outside (like when he played in the snow and whatnot). I tried to put him in the whole coat and it was difficult to strap him in so I decided it was easier to stick with the fleece.

Re: Winter coats and car seats
The straps wont be able to be as tight as they need to be if there's a bulky coat on them. An installer showed me once years ago. They had me put DD in her seat with her coat on and fix her straps to the best of my ability. Then I took her out, took her coat off and out her back in her seat (all without adjusting the straps again) when I clipped her back in it showed me how much extra "give" was in the straps because of the coat. I used to take her coat off, put her in her seat and put the coat on her backwards after strapping her in. And I would keep the car super warm!!

Re: Winter coats and car seats
Ughhh! I had a feeling. I really hate the whole car seat thing. And I hate the whole winter thing. Combine them together and HOLY AGGREVATION.
Not to mention my DD hates wearing anything bulky- I tried her winter coat on her and she freaked out! She doesn't even like wearing a sweatshirt or cardigan.
I can't wait for the days when we no longer need a car seat!

Re: Winter coats and car seats
Yeah I bought DS a North Face Denali to keep him warm with the car seat situation but the problem is day care. As long as the temp is 30* + they have to let the kids out twice a day for up to 30 minutes each time. He'll need something warmer than that to be outside in. Otherwise I know I'll get a note home

I wish they had something like the posh pouch for convertible seats

My DD1 is the same way. HATES bulky coats. She wears a fleece jacket and takes it off in the car. I keep a heavy fleece blanket in there and she uses that. She's done that since she was about 18months. Prior to that she was in the infant seat.
But yeah, danger aside, wouldn't we be uncomfy if we had a bulky jacket on and then a 5 pt harness, crunching it all up on us? I know I would.
If your DD doesn't like anything bulky including a sweater or fleece, consider the car seat poncho. I have a friend in Minnesota who uses these on her 3 kids.
