Winthrop BF class tonight...anyone going?
DH & I signed up for the Winthrop BF class. I was wondering if any of the LIF gals might be there....

FYI... a mom from the Parenting board told me that LIJ Plainview had a FREE BF support group everyweek with a LC. In case we need it after we give birth.

FYI... a mom from the Parenting board told me that LIJ Plainview had a FREE BF support group everyweek with a LC. In case we need it after we give birth.

I went to the class last night. It was pretty good, but the woman giving the class was a little disorganized & scatter-brained. There were a lot of good questions, and some decent info including resources & a few support groups.
The only thing that concerned me is that the info that she gave (she is an RN & a LC at Winthrop) was slightly contradictory to what the Pediatrician from Winthrop gave us the night before a orientation. Like the fact that they use pacifiers in the nursery during "viewing hours" to keep the babies quiet. This kind of bothered me b/c accourding to our instructions that we fill out they should NOT be giving paci's to BF babies. Also the baby HAS to go to the nursery during viewing hours, but then stays there overnight & the nurses bring the baby to you at night on THEIR schedule to BF, not the baby. The Ped told us that the baby can stay in the room..... I dunno I am a little stressed now about how helpful they will be in the maternity ward.

I have heard the same about the overnight BF schedule. I will tell them that there will be NO pacifier and that I want the baby brought to me when he wants NOT on their schedule. Also, you need to tell them not to give them water or supplements and that the baby is BF only.
I think the peds and nurses are not in sync on this and the nurses follow their own nursery schedule vs the mom/baby schedule.

My SIL had an issue with this at Winthrop. You just have to be forceful and let the nurses know your not trying to make things harder on them but this is YOUR child and they need to do what YOU want. They arent doing you any "favors", its their jobs...
She was told the baby could not room in and wasnt up to fighting for it, but if you want that, so be it, its your baby, they cant say no, you cant have your baby ya know?

Yes, I heard they did that to hold on the BF which I think is every 3 hours. I will have to find out myself to confirm the 3 hour schedule but I think I read it either on their website or paperwork/brochure I have from therm.

WHAT? Pacifiers are the biggest offenders of nipple confusion... I will flip out & lose my mind

It is YOUR baby and YOUR right to demand they follow your requests - be that to bring th ebaby whenever baby wants to feed, no paci, etc.
NSUH made this very clear during the tour - unless th emother GIVES CLEAR INSTRUCTIONS, they will do whatever THEY (the nurses) feel is best. So be a PITA if you have to!

I wish I was the little mouse in the wall to watch this one....
DH is going to be so annoyed with me being such a control freak. He is so much more laid back than I am.
