With all the upsetting threads lately about parents doing stupid things....
Like leaving their kids in the car, or that one on NFR about the woman getting hit by the train with her kids in the car, I always think of how these poor kids have no power or control over their lives at all.
They trust their parents, and rely on them to keep them safe and take care of them.
But, the scary thing is, even if they didn;t trust their parents, or knew their parents were going to hurt them, they usually can't even protect themselves, or get away...
Like the little girl in the car. She could never get out of her car seat on her own.... It bothers me to think how helpless and scared she must have been.
Why do I do this to myself? I guess I just look at Cailen, and can't imagine him ever being in a wet diaper for too long, let alone anything else... And the way he puts his head on my shoulder, and wraps his little arms around my neck..... It is ultimate trust. How could anyone violate that????

That's why I really can't read these stories. The accidents KILL me because you know the parent can't live with themselves. But the ones that really sicken and upset me to the millionth degree are the stories of outright neglect and abuse.
I just do not comprehend how someone can neglect and/or abuse the innocence, and blind trust that a little baby has for its parent. It just kills me. It used to upset me, but now, KNOWING the fragility of it all, the innocence of a young child, I just can't stomach it. I really do avoid reading the newspaper these days because of it.

Well said. Sometimes I look at DD sleeping and think about that innocence and what a huge job it is to take care of her every need. There are times that I feel guilty for leaving her in an outfit with a little spit up for an hour or two before bed. I just cannot imagine doing something on purpose that would put her in harm's way.

Re: With all the upsetting threads lately about parents doing stupid things....
I remember as a kid we used to make fun of my mom because she could not watch certain tv shows if they had a storyline involving something terrible happening to a child. She would burst into tears and either leave the room or force us to change the channel - and my sister and I would just sigh and say "But mom it's only a tv show!"
The moment I held DD in my arms I understood my mom's behavior. I cant bear the thought of anything happening to her - or any child. There's this unbelievable joy in being a mother - coupled with unbelievable worry at the fact that there are so many children who dont get the love and protection they so desperately need.
