With the state of the economy..
Would it be worth it for me to go back and get my Master's in Ed?
It's something I have always thought of, and a few years back I got my CE in Elementary Ed here in NJ...
Now with a lot of people being laid off I don't know if I should do it. It would of course take me some time to complete my Masters.
What do you guys think?

Re: With the state of the economy..
In NY you have to get your masters- no choice. If it were a choice, hmmm. I guess the only reason I might not get it is because a district could think I am too expensive (if you are in a state where masters are not mandatory). Don't know if NJ districts would think to hire cheaper vs better educated.

I would never steer people away from the profession since I love it, but this article does not make the job perspective look good: Teaching No Longer a Recession Proof Job

Oh, I just read the post below me and now I understand that you are not currently a teacher. I thought you already were a certified teacher and wanted to get a masters. I can't really offer an opinion then bc i don't know what the jobs are like in NJ. It is really hard to find a teaching job in NY, though.

Jen- I know this is something that you have been thinking about for a while. I would love to say to you to go with your gut and start a Masters program, but the teaching job market is not the greatest right now. From what I hear, NJ is even worese that LI right now. My only thought is if you can find an affordable Masters program that you can start and work through slowly, maybe by the time you finish the outlook will be better. I am sorry because I know you want this and have been talking about it for a while!

I agree with Ive, unfortunately, Jen. I hate discouraging anyone from going into the profession...it STINKS. But I like Ive's idea...it might pay off in the long run if things turn around...there always seem to be cycles of retirees.
I hope you find what makes you happy!
