Woman Can't Close Eyes After Cosmetic Surgery
A woman who claims she cannot close her eyes even when she sleeps is suing the plastic surgeon who operated on her.
Marilyn Leisz, from New Jersey, said she went to Dr Paul Parker to have a procedure to correct bumps on her eyelids from a surgery performed by another doctor.
She now cannot close her eyes to blink or sleep and has to use a number of drops and gels to ensure her eyes are not damaged or her vision impaired.
Speaking to CBS she said: 'That’s how it is when I sleep. That’s how it is 24-7, 365 days a year.'I can close my eyes like this, but to blink I really have to really squeeze my eyes together.'
Dr Parker faced the married mother-of-two in court yesterday where he claimed the patient was warned of the risks and given a leaflet outlining them.
It was also claimed that the patient did not complain after the 2005 eye surgery, which is called a blepharoplasty.
The doctor has insisted that among the things Mrs Leisz was warned of was possible incomplete eyelid closure and dryness. He also maintains he did not deviate from accepted standards of care in performing the procedure.
Mrs Leisz said because she had two blepharoplasties before this one, she was not an ideal candidate for the surgery as so much skin had already been removed from the eyelids.
'He should have been honest with me and told me I was not a candidate and suggested other options for me,' she said.
Mrs Leisz said she has to use gel at night and a vaporizer so she doesn’t scratch her eyes. She also says she’s losing her vision.
Blinking is what keeps the cornea moist, attorneys explained during the trial. Without blinking, the cornea can be damaged by excessive dryness.
She admitted to having the other procedures before this one and said though she may be able to have more to correct the problem, she is afraid to go under the knife again.
She said: 'All the favourite things I used to, like tennis, racquetball, swimming, horseback riding, bike riding, skeet shooting, gardening, I can’t do those things.'
Dr Parker's lawyer argued to jurors that a woman who had two of the same surgeries prior to this should have known the risks involved.
He said: 'What reasonable patient who had multiple cosmetic surgery would not take the time to read a brochure about the nature of the procedure and the risks inherent to it?'
Mrs Leisz's lawyers said Dr Parker should have known better than to perform surgery on eyelids that had already been stretched to the limit.
She has asked the jury for an unspecified amount of money.
The case continues.
