Won't change formula??

Ds has not had a bowel movement on his own, without stimulation for over a month. I just spoke to his ped and he does not want to change the formula said just keep stimulating him and giving him water daily. He also said no prune juice in his bottle bc it can cause cramping.

Has anyone else ever had this occur in their dc for this long?? I feel like this is a long period of time for him no to produce a bowel movement on his own.

I go back to the doctor for his 2 month checkup on the 21st.

I feel awful he seems so uncomfortable a lot of the time and he tries to push with no satisfaction Chat Icon

Re: Won't change formula??

That's odd that your doctor won't allow you to switch the formula. It sounds like the iron his probably constipating him. I personally would probably switch it without the doctor's okay and see if a low iron formula or a different brand makes it better.

Re: Won't change formula??

Kristen, that seems crazy to me. Do you want me to call my cousin who works for the Pediatrician and see what he says. I was just there this morning too, I could have asked him.

Re: Won't change formula??

That' doesn't sound right to me.

As the AP said, I would switch to something like Gentlease or something like that.

I think some pediatritions like to wait until they are 3 months before switching formula because their digestive tract is immature at this point. But I don't believe in that and neither does my ped.

I switched Steven's at about 2 months. he was very gassy and a little constipated.

Re: Won't change formula??

I also read that stimulating them all the time may actually not be good because then their body does not learn to "push" without the stimulation. I need to stim my dd about once a week now instead of every day like I used to...she has a bm evey day or every other day but she was not going when we first switvhed her formula. I think you can try another formula, it cannot hurt

He said that all formulas have iron and he doesn't think that is what's doing it and even if it is he needs the iron to prevent anemia.

I personally think changing it is what he needs to do and I told him that but he said he wants me to bring him in at his 2 month appt and he'll examine him and see. I'd switch him without the doctor saying so but I wouldn't even know what to change the formula too....

Re: Won't change formula??

My Ped changed DD formula when she was a week old.... The Similac Advance was causing her to be very gass and fussy, he changed her to Lactose Free and she has been great ever since..... I would try changing the formula.

Re: Won't change formula??

My ped has said the same, and babies do need the iron.

When you say he is pushing without going.

Is he crying while he goes on his own?

Are his BM's hard and formed?

If they are not hard and formed he isn't constipated. Constipated babies can make BM"s that look like rabbit pellets.

All babies grunt, turn red, make noise when they have a bm at that age, they don't know what's going on yetChat Icon It's awful to see as a mommyChat Icon

My DD has had constipation issues since we put her on formula at 3 months old. She still does, even though she drinks wayyy less formula than she did at 3 months old.

We watered down her formula, if i gave her 5 ounces of formula, 1 oz of that was water at every feeding. IF she passed hard stools, she got pear juice.

Chat Icon Try to trust your ped, if you don't maybe it's time to change PEd's.

He hasn't had a bm on his own for over a month. Its not constipation bc the consistancy is like toothpaste, but when ds pushes on his own nothing happens. Chat Icon

I wait it out everyday and nothing, no bms since he was 3 weeks old, he'll be 8 weeks on Friday.

I stim him before bed so he can sleep comfortably.

Has the PED checked him for a blockage? Maybe his anus/rectum area might have a blockage that is preventing him from going. He might be doing the work but can't make it come out.

I would most def bring him to another PED for a second opinion. If his BM's are like toothpaste, it's def not the formula and you are right he's not constipated. So changing formula's won't help at all.

If I were you, I would def get a second opinion and get him evaluated.

Hope everything is okayChat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Won't change formula??

I dont understand...a month of not having a bowl movement isnt good...it means that he is constipated. Jacob has problems with constipation and at 2 months old, we gave him prune juice diluted with water. The pediatrician also recommended 1/4 teaspoon of mylanta. We give that to him 3 times a day...if we dont, he gets really constipated. I also dont understand why the ped. said not to change his formula...that is one of the first things that our ped. recommended Chat Icon

Re: Won't change formula??

My son went a few weeks without going if not stimmed. The ped told me water and then water with karo syrup and only stim every other day...still nothing. when i finally called back again another dr in the practice told me to stop stimming all together and call back by the weekend if nothing happened. this was a wed. I couldnt imagine not doing anything bc he was so uncomfortable and was doing so much pushing and nothing but the next day he went ---and has gone just about every day since then...that was about 2 weeks ago.

I was nervous about stimming bc I didnt want to do more harm but he needed it. did he ever go on his own? sorry to be gross but does he pass gas a lot and are there ever any smears in his diaper???

Good luck!

at my one month visit, my ped said that at that age babies stomachs slow down alot...he said they do not consider it a problem unless they do not have a bm for 4 days....I would not stim him and see if he goes in a few days....I know it is hard when they are struggling to go Chat Icon

Re: Won't change formula??

YOU ARE THE MOMMY!! You make the rules!!! Just do it. Why should your son be uncomfortable?? That never makes sense to me. I changed my sons formula even though my Ped wasn't to sure that I should. My son was SO much happier after. And when I told him what I did. My ped was glad that I did it on my own & I was right.

Just got home from the doctor he said to do whatever I feel comfortable with, he said eventually he will go but if I want to switch formulas switch to Nutramigen or Alimentum.
