Wood burning stove..
Does anyone have one? When did you install it? Approx. how much was it to install? Does it help with the fuel bill?
I'm concerned about oil next year and trying to think of alternatives. We live in Eastern Suffolk, so I can't convert to gas as there are no lines. It's either wood or propane and I'm not sure which is better.

We got a pellet stove last year. Let me tell you... I want to shout from the ROOFTOPS about this thing. Do you want to know what my oil bills were this winter? $100 a month. That's it! We only used oil to heat the hot water- this stove heated my whole house. My house was warmer than it has ever been with oil too...
The most amazing investment you can make.
It cost about 3500 to buy and have installed. Worth EVERY SINGLE PENNY!

We're looking into a multi-fuel furnace: Yukon-Eagle
It switches between wood and oil.
ETA: it's approx. 5K for the unit.

Where did you get it from? How big is it? Where did you put it?
Just this past weekend I was talking to DH's cousin about this! I'm very interested in this. Our house is a split and very open so I'm sure this thing would be great for us. With the price of oil, this would pay for itself in no time!

If you have an exisiting fireplace- you can buy an insert that will go right into your fireplace and vent out your exisiting chimney... we have friends who did this. If you don't, like us, you can buy a freestanding unit and they will need to vent it to the outside through the wall. Ours is in our livingroom-in a corner. It actually looks very nice and is not an eyesore at all. It doesn't take up that much space either. Here is the link to the brand that we got... I hear this is the most popular brand
Stoves
It is so clean burning and produces SO much heat. It is seriously the best money we have ever spent.

Re: Wood burning stove..
There is a place in levittown (N. Jerusalem Rd) in a strip mall that sells these. Like someone else said in this post, it's the best thing to do. We will look into this if i ever move. Currently, the layout of my house is not condusive for this (too many walls), however the salesman at this store said it wouldn't matter, but i can't believe that...

We have a wood burning stove. I don't think it really helps so much with the heat. It is nice to look at. However, we went over my cousins and he has one of these and it is so awesome! It feeds itself the pellets and makes the whole house warm! It was so much more low maintenence than the wood burning stove! I want toget it next year!

My parents have a wood burning stove that definitely helps to keep the house warm. Their oil bill was also not too terrible this year because of the stove.

My hubby usually takes care of that part! But I can tell you it's pretty low maint. You just have to empty an ash pan each day. Once a week I think, he scrapes out any hard deposits of creosate (?) that build up in the stove with a tool they give you. That's pretty much it. Once a year it needs a thorough cleaning and the company that installs it can come down and do that for you if you want or you can do it yourself but it's a bit more involved.

Re: Wood burning stove..
We have an antique Jotel wood burning stove. We love it. It's really cute, especially when we sit around it in the winter! My hubby installed it with my uncle and they were able to just vent it right out the roof. It's small so it doesn't save us huge amts. in our oil bills...but we like it.
Good Luck!

forgot to add....my mother has one also. Hers is much bigger than ours and does heat her home significantly so she can use less oil.

Re: Wood burning stove..
We invested in a wood pellet stove last fall. We were familiar with them because our last house had one...
We have electric heat. We moved here in the winter of 2006/2007. Our electric bills were $800 a month. It made us question buying this house actually... Almost all of the neighbors here (homes were all built in the '80's) have converted to either oil or propane, there are no gas lines around here. But our house was strictly electric.
Anyway, it cost about $3500 to have it installed, and that was including 2 tons of pellet (we store it in the garage - 40 pound bags). We got an "insert" so the stove fits partially in the fireplace and sits on the hearth. It's vented outside.
We got a model that would heat approx. 2200 sq feet. Our house is 3000 sq ft, with my (large) bedroom being on the third floor (split level house, bedroom was an extension). The heat doesn't fully reach up there, but sometimes I would just have to turn on the electric heat for a few minutes to take the chill out.
Our bills went from $800 a month down to about $300 a month. (because everything else, stove/dryer/etc still runs on electric and I have a big house with tons of lights, lol). We NEVER (with the exception of my bedroom) turn on the electric heat. We did have to buy two more tons of pellet at like $250 each time. But it was still worth it. Because we have a weird split, we did install a tiny quiet fan in the corner of the family room (where the pellet stove is) and that helps to blow the air up the stairs.
Maitenance isn't bad at all, every few days we have to clean out the ashes, we vacuum them out. We kept this stove running 24/7 from October until a couple of weeks ago. We would sweat a bit in the family room, lol, but I love it and would definitely recommend getting one.

Re: Wood burning stove..
I actually used to work at a stove/fireplace store and I can attest that woodburning stoves (even the pellet ones) are fantastic and you can use them all year.
The inserts dont throw off as much heat, so the little wood burning stoves are the way to go.
Consider that you will need to buy wood (like a LOT) and need a place to store it... same with the pellets. But its great as you can feed the stove all day, and let it burn without having to worry about it. The maintenance is little more than sweeping out ashes, letting them sit for a week in a can, then dumping.
If you want a really awesome place to check out prices etc FM me (I dont work there anymore but its a mom and pops place that has been in business forever and they are great to work with)
good luck!

Re: Wood burning stove..
Great post! DH and I were just talking about this and we are now convinced thanks to reading all of your posts! We are looking into it now, pellet insert for our fireplace. One question: Our fireplace is 2-sided. It sits between our den and living room so no matter what room you are in you can sit by the fire. You can look through it into the other room. Will an insert work? Dh said we'll make it work!

Re: Wood burning stove..
My parents have one that they have had since 1977. Sadly, I tripped and fell into and burned my hand when I was three years old
As far as the warmth, it really warms their house. It is such a comforting feeling to walk into their house on a cold winter day.
It has also helped with the oil bill. They just use oil for heating water.
If you decide to get a woodburning stove, make friends with someone who does tree removals. My parents' neighbor does tree removal and brings my dad wood all the time.

fireplaces as a whole don't throw off as much heat as a traditional stove so I'm not sure you could count on this to heat your home but worth looking into. And I agree with you, not sure if it would work on a double-sided fireplace but there are a ton of innovations and it sounds like your DH is gonna get creative!

Re: Wood burning stove..
Hi, I know this thread is a few months old but I just wanted to mention to the poster that mentioned her home isn't built to have a stove effectively heat it, mine is like that too. We are looking into what they call a biomass stove (I think that means it is a multi-fuel stove) and it blows forced air into ducts and into each room you want heated. It will cost more - I don't know for sure since we haven't done it yet but we have too soon! - but that is how we are getting around that issue. Harmon.com has products for central heating with wood burning stoves.

Re: Wood burning stove..
Ok so how does this work exactly? My DW and I just bought our first house and we have a working fireplace. I am afraid that the heating bill for the winter will be obscene because she is always cold.
What kind of addition would you add to your fp so that it can heat your house?

You should probably look into either a wood-burning or pellet fireplace insert. An insert gets installed into your existing fireplace and would look similar to this:
One of these inserts will turn your inefficient standard fireplace into an excellent secondary source of heat. Maybe even your primary! Another benefit of the insert is that it won't take up any additional floor space. Of course the down side is the price. I got a quote for almost $5k!! that included a pellet insert, installation and a stainless steel liner for my chimney.
