Wood Floors/Wood Furniture Question

OK - we are putting down wood laminate floors in our bedroom. We have a wood furniture set - help!
I don't think I could ever get the exact match of the woods to match - and I actually like a darker wood floor than what the furniture is.
This is not our forever furniture - it's hand me down and I've had it for years - but it's good furniture and definitely what we have for the near future.

What do I do? Can I do different woods? Will it look horrible? If I find something to match - will that look bad too - too "matchy matchy?"

Please give your advice!

This is the closest I could find online to color of our bedroom furniture:

Please help!

I know carpet would be easier and DH actually wanted carpet but we have pets - we know we're going to let them in the our bedroom and I don't want our carpet trashed like it is in our apt now.

Re: Wood Floors/Wood Furniture Question

you dont want your floors and furntiure to be exact anyway.. iiin my house I have darker floors and dark wood furniture, but they arent exact, acutally my floors are lighter. But i also see lots of people with light colored floors and darker wood furniture and it looks great.

however, if you are not considering this your forever furniture i would choose the floors that you like and not worry about the furniture that you have. the furniture you will change and if you match your floors to the furniture you have now, you may regret it later when purchasing new pieces.

you really should do different stains. It wouldn't look to good if you try to match it, because that would be near impossible, and then your not going to see the furniture very well. It should be 3-5 shades darker or lighter Chat Icon

Re: Wood Floors/Wood Furniture Question

With the exception of our bedroom furniture all the furniture in our place is dark.

We have dark wood floors. I agree with pp who stated that you don't want your furniture to match your floor, go a few shades darker or lighter.

Re: Wood Floors/Wood Furniture Question

Thank you guys. So even though the floors and floors are going to be different wood stains, that wont look awful? And going lighter or darker is fine? With the examples I gave - do you think our furniture would look ok with either of those floors?

Re: Wood Floors/Wood Furniture Question

We have wood floors in our great room-they are chestnut and our furniture is cherry. I don't think you would want things too matchy-matchy-the contrast is nice!

You def. don't want to be matchy matchy. You wouldn't like it I don't think. Plus if you will be getting new furniture at some point, you might not be able to match it down the road.

We have lighter floors than all of our furniture and that includes our cabinets in the kitchen.

Re: Wood Floors/Wood Furniture Question

i think we are going to do the same flooring as your first choice (the Dream Home Rosewood)

and this is the furniture we plan on getting (with either the dresser/TV hutch OR just the TV armoire - we still haven't decided on what piece yet - the dresser/TV hutch would be more practical b/c it has more storage but we just love the look of the armoire)

I don't think the woods have to match exactly - the contrast and differences in the flooring and furniture is nice.....We're probably going to put a white rug under the bed and do all white linens to break it up - and probably slate/gray colored walls....

I also think we're going to try putting our fireplace in the bedroom - this piece won't match the bedroom furniture OR the flooring - but it should be close enough to fit in (you can see it in the background - it's the only photo I have of it at work)

I have a feeling that our furniture will end up being a little darker than the flooring and I think that is fine....I don't think you'd ever want it to be all match-matchy anyways....

If you notice in the fireplace picture, our flooring is lighter than ALL of our furniture and I think it looks good with the contrast....

I'm nervous about doing a darker flooring in the house Chat Icon

Re: Wood Floors/Wood Furniture Question

I never even thought about matching my furniture to the wood floors. It just so turned out that our furniture is darker and I love the contrast.

(Just an FYI, the darker you go in stain the more you will notice in scratchesChat Icon )

Re: Wood Floors/Wood Furniture Question

flooring SHOULD be a different shade/color than the furniture. it's more common for the wood flooring to be lighter than the furniture but i am sure that lighter furniture would look fine as well.

Thanks so much for linking that post! Our floor looks very much like the first pic (well at least it does in the box) lol. When we get new bedroom furniture - we'll prob want to go darker - ebony, espresso.

If that is what you do in the future, just make sure you balance the room out with some lighter pieces, so the room doesn't seem so dark & heavy. GL! I think you will be fine.
