Wood patio furniture--anyone have it? Is this not a good idea?
DH and I are eyeing a GORGEOUS patio furniture set at a local store here in NC. It's absolutely gorgeous and only $299 for the entire set.
I know we will need to keep on top of making sure it's weather-treated regularly (especially living in a hot, humid climate where we get a LOT of sun throughout the day), but...I'm wondering if this is not such a good idea. I mean, we all know what happens to wood when it's left outside.
Just wondering if any of you have a wood set, and if you can give me some reviews. Tomorrow is the last day of the sale, so we need to make a decision quickly.
For what it's worth, we'd also be purchasing a canopy-type gazebo that would be left over it, so that it's not AS exposed to the elements.
Isn't this set gorgeous, though???? And you should see it with the gorgeous striped cushions that they display it with in the store.

The set is stunning. What kind of wood is it made out of? Is it teak? Is it natural or covered in polyurethane? When I was younger my parents had a wooden set in a screened in porch. Well, it was just natural and with time and the elements it really got beaten up (splintering) because of the cold and the heat. It would expand and contract. I think NC does not have the vast extremes of NY and it might do better there. Also, if you could put it away for the winter you might have it last longer.

Good point about putting it away for the winter...that might work, especially because our "winter" is about 6 weeks long
The set is natural--part of the reason it's on such a deep discount is because the manufacturer forgot to apply the weather sealant. So we'd be applying the polyurethane ourselves.
What to do, what to do...
ETA: The wood is eucalyptus.

It is beautiful!!
I don't know much about wood and how to properly care for it. We have a wood set (it was a gift) and we didn't keep up with it properly and now it's splintery and some of the wood is cracking. We are moving and decided to just throw it out rather than bring it with us.
With 2 kids, work, etc the last thing I have time for is treating a wood patio set. I'm going for a low maintenance set at the new house.

This.
We have a beautiful teak wood set. Like you, I got it for a deep discount at the end of the season.
It is such a thorn in my side applying the teak oil to it every season we take it out. I applied it about 5 weeks ago and needs to be redone already. I am in NY though so my "season" is shorter so I can sort of live with it. I also have been keeping my eyes open for other sets on discount though because I just can't keep up with the maintenace of this.
IMO, put the $$$ towards a low maintenance set.
