Work "situation"
In December, at our "holiday luncheon" (that everyone got sick from), the owner of the company announced that we'll all be getting Holiday bonuses, but not until after January 1st, due to tax purposes.
First of all, we thought this was a crock of $hit, because what sense does a "holiday bonus" make in January? Well January came and went, and no sign of the bonuses. We're now well into February, and anytime someone brings it up, the owner SNAPS, and yells "well you MAY NOT GET THEM AT ALL".... no one knows why, it's really really weird.
There's only 12 employees, office morale is at an all time low. One of the senior billers gave 2-week notice yesterday.
What can be done in this situation? I mean, why make an announcement promising a bonus, then not follow through? Especially because it's a small place, and he works closely with us every single day?

Re: Work "situation"
I don't think anything can be done about getting the bonus.
It was pretty crappy of them to mention it and not be sure they were going to give it, though.

I don't think you have any recourse, unfortunately. But they handled things really unfairly.

Re: Work "situation"
IMO- I don't think anything can be done about the situation. Since bonuses are not mandatory. I guess someone can just ask him about it and see what he says?

I haven't but I would ask maybe that the office manager adress it w/ the boss. That way he or she can speak for the group in either e-mail or a meeting.

We're all on an equal level...the woman that holds the title of office manager is the owner's wife. She "works from home" - a.k.a. "is on the payroll, but doesn't do jack."

Re: Work "situation"
I just posted something similar in a way, I don't know how to ask for what is due to me, not "due" to me, but it has been this way (raises every January) for as long as I can remember. I shouldn't feel bad for asking, this years bomus was $300.00 less than last year, I felt that it was a stab in the back, since I am doing sooo much more work than last year.
I really don't know what can be done about this, obviously your boss doesn't want to talk about it, as someone already asked about it. Sad to say you may not get it. Did you get one every year before this?

Re: Work "situation"
Nic - I would have a backup. If it's a small office, they promised raises & then aren't giving them - there may be layoffs. Are you on the books? Wait don't answer that - FM me!

Re: Work "situation"
We always get a nice holiday bonus - about 1 weeks pay.
This year, he told us it would be significantly less - but we'd still get one. BUT we never did!
I have not gotten a raise since May 2004. I asked for one last month and was told "There's not enough money for that now."
I DO THE DEPOSITS - I know there's money. My responsibilities have increased in the past year, and I know they're happy with my work, because they say it all the time. They just don't SHOW it.

Barbara, I'm definitely on the books.
It's a medical office.
