Working after baby is born...

How many of you are returning to work after the baby is born? My DH and I decided that daycare is just too expensive, and basically my entire weekly salary would go to day care! SO, I am planning on staying home. A little worried... I haven't been home every day in I can't tell you how long. Anyone else in the same boat?

Re: Working after baby is born...

I won't be going back to my regular job - basically for the same reasons you stated. Daycare for 2 kids would just cancel out what I make. However, we cannot afford for me to be a SAHM, I have to make some kind of income. I am looking into working from home options and also getting a job in a hospital where I will work the 3rd shift, that way the amount of time we need childcare will be limited.

Re: Working after baby is born...

I will be going back to work but not happy about it. I feel like we will alternate our parents to watch the baby. My mom doesn't work and DH's mom is retiring (she is a nurse) and this will be her first grandchild so I am sure she will be thrilled, at least for a bit...maybe we should talk to them about this first huh? My mom though took care of my nephews and niece when my sister had her kids so I assume it would be the same for me.

i will be going back to work...we have no other option.

with the way dave's schedule is now - he is home on Tuesdays and Fridays (and we do not see that getting changed) - so he can care for the baby those days.

I am almost positive i can work from home one day a week - so we will only need daycare for 2 days a week....(i think we'll be able to afford that)...

Re: Working after baby is born...

I just couldn't believe the price of day care. I called a bunch of places... I only wanted to go to like a Tutor Time... I don't like the idea of someone watching the baby in their home... Figure it's about 315-350 a week... I just cannot swing that. Hopefully I will be able to find something part time at night just to supplement DH's salary...

I was looking into Tutor Time too, and it's also way out of my budget.

Someone on LIF posted this website and it was extremely helpful:
http://www.childcaresuffolk.org/default.aspx
I was able to locate a few child care providers who would charge me a significant amount less than a center (out of their homes). The difference was almost half the cost!!! Take a look...hope this helps! Chat Icon

Re: Working after baby is born...

I will be going back to work F/T as well. However, I gave up my job, a director's role, to become a case manager again. I will be doing most of my work from home/setting my schedule with clients in the field and the baby will stay with his grandparents most of the time. I also am planning to look for a "back up" in my area for days that they may not be able to watch him. I plan to actually look for someone through this site who may be interested!!

Re: Working after baby is born...

I'm going to keep working. I looked a lot into stopping (though even if we did daycare it would still be worth it for me to work), and though I think we could live on DH's salary alone, it's not just your weekly takehome that disappears; it's the money towards retirement, etc., and the amount less that you'll be making when/if you return to the workforce later. For me my benefits alone are worth over $15,000.

I have a relatively high-level job (well, relatively Chat Icon) where I am, and to give it up, I doubt I could return at the same level in 3 or 4 years. I also don't want to give up contributing substantially to my retirement.

Re: Working after baby is born...

I am going back after 8 weeks... I ahve no choice. I make a considerable amont more than DH & I carry all of the benefits. I am alsogoing back to school in January. I have 3 more classes to take to finih my MBA. I am tooo close to the end to stop now. Plus when I graduate, I am getting a promotion & a pretty big raise so I MUST go back & finish. I know it will be hard but it is the best thing for my family.

My mother will be babysitting while DH & I work. She still works, but she works nights. She HATES the idea of having him go to daycare so young, so she offered to watch him for us. We are so thankful! Since money is tight we decided to take her up on her offer but only for the 1st year. After that he will be going to daycare. By then I will have received my raise & will be able to comfortably afford it.

I work P/T and will continue to work P/T after the baby comes. My mom will be watching the baby on the 3 days that I work.

Re: Working after baby is born...

Dh and I own a business together and work from home. I will not be involved anymore in the day to day but will probably continue to help out from time to time.

We are in the process of hiring a replacement for me with my client duties though.

After we get a routine down I will probably start something of my own on the side and see how that works out.

Re: Working after baby is born...

I am a teacher and I'll go on maternity leave in June (due the 21st) but I'm also in my tenure year. I believe I have to return at least for the first day of the next school year to get my tenure. The hope is that I can continue my maternity leave past that!! I'm hoping I can stay out until November.
