This was our dilemma....DH's salary was the lower one and after day-care expenses, there is very little to take home, so we decided that DH will be a SAHD for now and we will see how it goes.

Worked for us for a while until DH went stir crazy! He's in real estate so no benefits and he was able to still make deals and show properties evenings and on the weekend. So he actually still worked and made money here or there.

Andrew's in part time day care now with DH watching him 2 days a week.

Re: working after giving birth

I was out on maternity for 9 weeks and DH stood home for 6 weeks after that before going back to work.

Bella started going to daycare when she was a little over 4 months and we pay 1300 a month...the money DH is making is worth it as we were just paying the bills with my salary...

This summer, I hope to go to 3-4 days a week and pay significantly less.

for us, its worth it for me to return to work (after 6 months). i can pay daycare plus the mortgage with my salary and i have off during the summer. its not ideal, but its not terrible either.

Re: working after giving birth

My DH has a schedule that he can be home 2-3 days a week.
My boss told me that I can work part-time and mostly from home so it looks like I will only have to be in the office once a week (when DH is home).
If I had to pay for daycare though, I don't think it would have been that beneficial for me to go back to work.

Re: working after giving birth

Watching a child in your home has many things to consider: If you are not licensed and anything happens you can get into a lot of legal trouble. Also, you need to consider that if you are sick or your baby is sick, you still need to provide daycare for the other child. You may or may not have to claim the income you earn depending on the situation with the other person. Since there is a daycare tax deduction you would need to claim the income in order for the person to use it.

20/20 or Dateline did a big show once on how some women pay to work..how it actually costs them money because daycare, cost of lunches, work clothing, commuting etc...was more than the women brought home. Also, your entire tax bracket changes when you stop working so that is also something to consider.

Personally it still pays for me to work and will even after I have the new baby home and my daycare bill doubles. But for other women, it is simply not the case.

Re: working after giving birth

I've been feeling very sad about this lately. I hate my current job- I would LOVE to be a SAHM but we can't afford it. I make good money, and it's a nice company but HR is not a "passion"- and it will certainly feel like less of one after our baby is here. But, that's life! Chat Icon

We have been saving a lot so I know that we will be able to afford full time day care but i am hoping that my boss lets me work from home one or two days a week. Chat Icon

Even with the huge chunk of change that daycare will cost me and DH, it will only be about 50% of my take home total salary if we go that route. Plus, considering my health insurance and retirmenet plan and the other great benefits i get at my company, it just does not make sense not to continue working. It sure helps that i like my job and my boss too.

Also, i don't think i would do well as a SAHM. While i am so looking forward to being a mom and believe it will be tough to start off with leaving them, i still think that I need to be out of the house at work during the week, but that is just me.

Re: working after giving birth

DH wants me to be a SAHM, but I cant- I would need to get out. My parents have offered already to watch the baby 3 days so I can work pt hours. I make up my own hours and charge my own fees to the doctors anyway so its easy to schedule a day and I start my day in the afternoon so I can rest in the am.
