Working Until Last Possible Day?

Anyone else going to attempt this? I hate this situation!

I only get 12 weeks out from work total, so if I go out a week before my due date, I'll only have 11 weeks at home with the baby (of course, assuming she comes on EDD, which I know is rare!). I don't want to waste the time off at home before she's born(I'm sure I'll be exhausted by then and needing to rest, and get last minute stuff ready, but still), I want as much time with the baby as possible, you know?

What's everyone's feelings on this? I mean, I obviously don't want to go into labor at work either. Don't think my office-mates would appreciate that! Chat Icon

Re: Working Until Last Possible Day?

I am in the same boat. 12 wks total. Unless I use vacation (which I don't have since I use them all the time!).

I guess I will work as long as possible and if I can't I will go on STD.

Re: Working Until Last Possible Day?

If I could, I'd start staying home in 2 weeks at 36 weeks because I'm just getting uncomfortable sitting all day at my desk. But, I only get 6-8 weeks paid medical leave, depending on delivery type. If I wanted to take earlier without a valid medical reason, I'd have to take no pay, which I can't do. I have some vacation time I want to tack onto my leave after he comes because I'd rather spend the time with him than sit on my butt at home. So, I'm stuck here until he arrives.

Re: Working Until Last Possible Day?

My plan right now, as of 23 weeks 3 days, is to work up until my scheduled c-section date and then take the 12 weeks after that. If I have to take anytime before then, I plan on using vacation.

It can be done, especially if you have a supportive job. I planned on working to the last day and did (literally). I went from work to the hospital- that was not planned.

Re: Working Until Last Possible Day?

Hmm...so many different options for everyone! Wouldn't it be nice if there was a universal 'maternity leave policy'? It would make it much less complicated.

My job will hold my position for 12-weeks total (as per FMLA). I am entitled to go out 2 weeks before, but then I only have 10 weeks after that. So, for part of that time (4 weeks), they pay me fully, which is nice & generous. Then, I use disability for the additional 2 or 4 weeks (depending on c-section or vaginal delivery), and the remainder of the time, I have to use vacation or sick time (I'm using all of my vacation & sick time up). But I can only be out 12 weeks consecutively, regardless of what time I use and the pay I receive for it! At least I think this is the deal...so confusing!!

But I do still want the most time with my baby, so I'll try to work until the very last day I can!!

Re: Working Until Last Possible Day?

Yes, I do desk work so no need for me to be at home doing the same.

I only get 6wks cause I added 2wk vacation.

I would be losing time if I take it beforehand. I rather time at home with baby.

Re: Working Until Last Possible Day?

Im doing the same thing. I havent been allowed to ride the ambulance since the end of my 1st trimester. I worked my last day Saturday at my part time job. Im staying at my full time job until the very second Jr. makes his appearance. I'd rather use my time to spend with him.

Re: Working Until Last Possible Day?

The plan as of now is to go out on April 20th and I am due May 3rd. I would use five days vacation and get a full paycheck on April 30th and start my STD on May 1st, then take the 6 or 8 weeks from then on. After that I have 18 vacation days that I am going to use some or part of.

I think if I didn't have to commute an hour each way via bus I may try to stay that last week, but between the commute and having to move June 1stChat Icon I think I need some "me" time at home.

Wow, that's nice. It would be so much easier if I got that too!

I'm so afraid of going into labor while I'm at work!

Re: Working Until Last Possible Day?

Tentatively, I plan on working until the pay week before my due date and taking a week of vacation. I had my first 8 days early...this puts me at 10 days before my due date. Hopefully, I have the baby during that week and only waste a couple vacation days instead of all 5. I have to use any paid time off between the time I leave and the birth...then disability.

However, in a twist of events, my dr. is also worried I won't have time to get to the hospital without delivering in the floor or the car, so I may be induced early to prevent that. So I could be stopping at 39 weeks or 37! Chat Icon

Eeek...now I'm more anxious to finish the nursery!!!!Chat Icon

I plan on working until my water breaks because we have no maternity leave. We'll see if that happens.

Re: Working Until Last Possible Day?

I too don't want to go into labor at work, considering I work in Plainview, live in Queens, and scheduled to deliver @ LIJ (I know there is an LIJ branch in PLainveiw though).

I plan to work as long as I can physically and as long as I can tolerate the 45 minute drive. I have my 30 week appt next week (though I will be 31 wks) and plan to talk with my Dr about the birth plan and about my commute and I guess play it by ear.

I (knock on wood) have been fortunate to not have any issues/complications during the pregnancy to limit my going to work.

I worked right up until the end- but it really depends on how you are feeling.
I worked until 7pm on Friday and DD was born 8.51 am on Saturday!

I worked two jobs up until my last day. Worked and went to see my doctor on 6/10, went into labor that night. She was born at 7:35 p.m. 6/11.

Re: Working Until Last Possible Day?

I work for the gov't so we don't have std. They allow for unlimited leave so my job will always be there but we have to use whatever sick & annual leave we saved up.

So, I plan to stop working 3 weeks before my edd & then take off 8-9 months. I'll only have about 7 weeks paid & the rest is unpaid

ETA: I wish I could stop working now!

Re: Working Until Last Possible Day?

I have 12 weeks of which some of that is FMLA and the other is vacation and sick time. I plan to take off 1 or 2 weeks before my edd. But i have a desk job so i can work up until the end as well. It depends on how i feel.

Re: Working Until Last Possible Day?

My EDD is 8/7 which is a Tuesday. Its to far away to determine but more than likely i wont be coming in that week if im still pg. If im all closed up and the dr says you still have time, ill probably take a few vacation days to spend time with DD before the baby is born (and to go to the beach Chat Icon )
