Would a doctor ever recommend a 500 calorie diet?
Even if the person had over 100lbs to lose?
My cousin is on a 500 calorie diet and she swears her doctor gave it to her. If he did, he needs to lose his license IMO. That's just really far below the safe range. She said it's to give her a weight loss boost, but I think it's just completely unsafe. Am I wrong?
It's my understanding that ANY adult needs at least 800-1200 calories a day!

It sounds extreme to me. Her body would go into starvation mode.
I would definitely suggest a second opinion or double check the instructions.

That doesn't sound right. Even on the Biggest Loser they eat more than 1000 calories - in one episode, Kim was talking to B about how he wasn't eating enough and she mentioned the number of calories he was supposed to be eating. It was over 1000. Now, he was also working out. Still though, 500 calories is crazy. I'm no doctor though!

That is extemely low. I would check twice with the Dr. Maybe he meant 1500?

Eating that little would totally slow down their metabolism. They should stick to AT LEAST 1,000 calories a day, if not more.

Yes. There was a girl on LIW who was on a diet like this- it included alot of supplements (she forwarded me her plan) and it was overseen by a doctor.
She wasn't even heavy to begin with!!

Re: Would a doctor ever recommend a 500 calorie diet?
There are some doctors who will prescribe a a modified protein sparing fast. It is very rarely used anymore and has to be closlely monitored by a doctor because of the risk of vitamin and mineral deficiencies, but it is possible.
Most doctors will not reccomend going below 1000 calories for that reason
