Would anyone be willing to share their experience?

My dr is 90% sure that (yet again) this pregnancy is not viable.

I was sent for more bloodwork today and will follow up with a sono on Thursday. He feels that I will ultimately need a D&C.

If you had a d&c, how bad was it? What should I expect? How long were you told to wait? When does it get easier?

If you're more comfortable FMing, that would be great too. If you'd rather not respond, I understand.

Thank youChat Icon I really can't believe I'm posting this AGAIN and so soon.

I am so sorry you are going through this right now Chat Icon

I had a D&C in March of 2009. The actual procedure and the physical recovery were really quick. I think I went out to dinner later that night and I definitely felt physically fine the next day. Emotionally was another story Chat Icon

I had to wait one cycle before trying again.

I am so sorry you are going through this. I had a D&C in August. The procedure itself was not bad. I had some cramping and spotting. I emotionally had a difficult time and did not go anywhere. If you want to talk you can FM. I had to wait one cycle and everyday it gets easier. Just take one day at a time.Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Would anyone be willing to share their experience?

I have a lot of experience in this area.

It's a lot to write now, and I'm starting to get a severe headache all of a sudden... where the lights are getting painful.

So I will write more later or tomorrow. I think I'm going to FM you though...

Good Luck!!

I'm sorry for what you are going through. No one deserves this....

I had a D&E which is a little different because I was 17.5wks along. My recovery (physically) was not bad. It took about 2wks until I was cleared to do things like exercise, BD, take a bath.. and that's about how long the bleeding went on for (maybe more like 2.5wks). The procedure itself was very scary but was much harder for me emotionally than anything else.

Re: Would anyone be willing to share their experience?

I had a d & c a few months ago. I was 2.5 months so I was told to schedule it asap. It really wasn't bad at all. I am afraid of giving blood so the thought of the procedure scared me tremendously. I went to the hospital to have it done and was shaking with fear but I was put out and woke up in recovery and felt fine. I had minimal bleeding after, less than af for a few days. I had very minor pain the next day and was able to go to work. I was able to ttc after my first af came around 6 weeks later. I am sorry for your loss. Fm me if you have any questions. Good luck.

Re: Would anyone be willing to share their experience?

The day before:
Preop testing: blood, blood pressure, etc. General health testing
Take an anti naseau pill

Day of:
Take an anti naseau pill
Arrive at ambulatory surgery, they take you into a room, check your temp, blood pressure, etc.
The doctor comes and explains what is going to happen (I fell in love with my doctor then Chat Icon ).
A grief counselor came by.
The anesthesiologist comes in to talk then takes you to the OR.
She talked me through everything and even had me laughing at one point.
My doctor held my hand as they put me under (again, he was just the sweetest Chat Icon)
I woke up in recovery with a great nurse. Some cramping and bleeding that stopped by the evening.
Physically it was fine - emotionally it is so hard. For me, it was harder a week after the D&C. I think I was in survival mode for the first 7 days then it hit me like a ton of bricks.

I'm sorry you have to experience this Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Would anyone be willing to share their experience?

My experience wasn't typical from what I can tell.

I had a missed miscarriage, so I found out at a routine dr's appointment. I was supposed to be 11 weeks along, baby was measuring behind by I think 2 weeks.

The dr gave me a few choices. I could just sit it out and wait to miscarry at home. He could give me an injection to induce mc where I would miscarry at home. I could have a DNC at his office with just a painkiller pill and be "uncomfortable" which really means in pain for it. or I could go to a hospital, be put to sleep to have the DNC and opt for genetic testing to be done. We chose the hospital so I could be asleep for it all and have the genetic testing done.

So you go the day before for some blood work and paperwork. You then go back the following day for the scheduled DNC.

They had me in the gown with heated blankets in this little area with a TV waiting to go in. I was there for some time. You have to fast beforehand.
Then you go into the room. which freaked me out. They strapped me down to the little table. the nurses and all try to keep talking to you to keep you somewhat calm. I was shaking like a leaf because I'm a baby. They kept piling up heating blankets on me.
Eventually I passed out. I woke up in recovery shivering uncontrollably. They had to put a tube that blew hot air under my blanket. I was loopy and out of it. When I got home, I was very sore in the uterus area.... sitting and moving was hard to do.

The dr said I would have some cramping for a day, maybe 2. that wasn't the case for me, AT ALL. I had SEVERE cramping for 10 full and complete days. Each day the cramping was different than the last but yet still just as painful. On the 8th day I had what I could ONLY describe as contractions. I started timing them and they were literally coming I think it was 6, maybe 8 (can't remember that detail too well anymore) minutes apart; but exactly the same amount of time apart from one another. I couldn't breathe really when they came and really just felt like an intense contraction in my uterus. It was the strangest thing. The dr never mentioned that was a possibility. I really didn't know what was happening.

Then for about 2 more days after that I had cramping and eventually it stopped. The cramps in total lasted for 10 days. I had no pain killers whatsoever and just braved all the cramping and contractions, though there were definite times where I wished I had them.

I bled, for about 2.5 weeks. It was similar to a period. But bright red and it was very very clotty. Big clots too. You cannot use a tampon. It's suggested to not use a tampon for at least 3 months due to risk of infection. I honestly was still sore in that whole area that I didn't even want to use a tampon or have sex for a WHILE!!!

Now, I know my case isn't the most typical. Other's seem to of healed faster and not experienced the types of cramping I did. But that's what I went through.

About 6 weeks later, maybe more, I received the genetic testing results.

Re: Would anyone be willing to share their experience?

First, let me start of saying how sorry I am that you are going through this. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I had a D & C in July after a routine sono found no heartbeat at 8 weeks. The procedure went well. I was crampy for a week, but had a heavy flow with clots a week after the procedure and then I was back to normal...physically. At my 2 week post-op, the doctor told me we could try again right away, but he couldn't guarantee I would ovulate. I didn't. I had 2 anovulatory cycles that lasted 5 weeks and I am not at the end of a "normal" cycle. I think I stressed myself out with trying to get pregnant right away again and my body reacted by not ovulating. I hope this helps and again...tons and tons of Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Would anyone be willing to share their experience?

I'm so sorry. Physically, it wasn't bad because you are put under. I was nervous, and it was first time being put under anesthia (spelling?). But that part was fine. I closed my eyes, and woke up to some cramping...they gave me some more pain meds, and I went back to sleep. Then I woke up a few hours after. I felt ok, just really tired from being under. This was ins 2005 so I dont remember exactly how long I was in the hospital, but I think 5-6 hours. The process is short, but afterwards you sleep for while, and they wait to release you.

Once I got home, I slept a lot that night. I think there was some slight cramping, but overall I felt ok.

Emotionally, it's hard of course. Dealing with that part was the hard thing, not the physical aspect of the D and C. I think you are supposed to wait a few weeks (2 maybe) before having sex. They will tell you all of that. Again, I forget some of those details since it was a long time ago.

Any questions, feel free to ask. I had both a natural mc and a dnc.

Re: Would anyone be willing to share their experience?

I had a D&C to get rid of some cysts.

For me it was fine. Also, you can take out all the angst for a MC reason.

But I was still scarred. I had my Finace with me (now DH) because the doc said I needed it in case we wanted to have kids.

They put me out. I asked for "happy medicine" as soon as they did the IV to take the edge off.

I had no cramping, no bleeding and was fine that day.

So, I dont want to compare my experience with the emotions of a MC. I get that. But my D&C went great.
