Would you be upset by this request?
I know I should be happy that I have a job but would you be upset if your boss asked you to document every minute you work on a status report? I'm not even in advertising or in a job where I have to bill my time to clients!
Ie. - run report - 10 minutes - call so and so - 15 minutes
She said it's to help justify request for additional resources... but someone else on my team ask if she should also document her time too and my boss said 'no need' to her. Granted, we do different things but how would you feel about that? Is that a cause for concern to just find another job?
Anyone else have to do this?
TIA.

This is a tough one. If you are actually working the way they expect you to there is nothing to worry about. If you haven't been as productive as you could be, I might start stepping up my game or look for a new job.

Re: Would you be upset by this request?
I'm in IT and we need to do this. I also don't bill out but the business must keep track of how much time certain projects are taking, and as you said for adjustment of resources, etc.
It's a pain in the rump...

Re: Would you be upset by this request?
has your dept been understaffed/overworked? if so, then i probably wouldn't worry and assume your boss is being up front. do you trust that your boss is being up front?
it could also be related to a re-organization of roles which may just be a job content change, AND/OR additional resource request, but not a job loss. maybe you can have another chat with your boss just to ask your questions and get a better feel for what's going on.

Re: Would you be upset by this request?
Thanks ladies, I suspect my boss is wondering why I can't seem to finish some of the tasks on my plate. Not that I'm slacking off since I've been working overtime when the need arise. And it has a few times.
She may be trying to justify the need for more staff 'cus we do need it, but to ask me to document every minute I work is abit over the top. I am looking for a new job and hope something materialize soon.

Re: Would you be upset by this request?
This really isn't something I'd be concerned with, unless I knew I had other performance issues. It's also not something I'd be annoyed about. Sometimes, as managers, we really DO need to know how much a task really does take so we can ensure adequate staffing and/or prove to the higher ups we need more staffing. Most managers, IME, will let you know there are performance issues FIRST, and then ask you to do something like this so you can find a solution. If she's telling you that it's so she can justify more staff and she hasn't been sneaky/vindictive previously, then take that at face value.
This alone wouldn't make me quit my job, but if I were overall not satisfied with my job, I could see how this would make me less satisfied.
