would you buy an ugly house if...

if it was the size you liked and has some extras.

(TOTALLY NOT MY STYLE. I shouldn't say it's ugly...)

We didn't look at this house, but it seems large enough and in one our our "chosen" areas. Could you get past it??

Sorry if it's small, i just copied it from an internet site.

I apologize if this is anyone's house on here, i mean no disrespect...

Honestly, no. I kept seeing a certain style of house in one area (not the normal ranch/cape, etc.) and every time I saw it, I sneered. Chat Icon

The front of your house is like your face - your first impression. The houses I was looking at were really severe and exactly the same as the rest in the area. I just couldn't do it. I wound up with a boring front but at least I can do something with it.

I would say no. To me curb appeal was important, yes not as important as the "guts" of the house but it meant a lot to us to pull up to a house and love it or at least love the potential of it.

It's the first impression you get, the first impression your guests get, etc...

I never hated the front of my house, but I was never "in love" with it..... after a major remodel, NOW I love it.... Chat Icon

Even without a major remodel, it's amazing what landscaping, and repainting/residing a house can do to the overall look.

If you think you can reface the house to make it look nicer, then you should give it a shot. However, if you don't think you'll be able to adapt it to something you like, you really don't want to come home to a house you don't like every day for the next few decades.....

Re: would you buy an ugly house if...

i know, i just came out of a house that i didn't love, at first... then, we painted, landscaped and it became a pretty house. one that people would look at driving by and in the summer people would say nice things about. "love the color of that" "look how nice that house is."

so, i am open, i think. but maybe not as much work as the house i showed you would be...

It also depends on how long you're staying. If you're looking for a forever house and can work with it (and have the $ to), I'd say yes. We are not in that situation, and even for our next house, I think I'll be looking for pretty close to perfection so we don't have to do so much work. Chat Icon

Not if I hated the actual architecture of it. If I just hated the siding, the front door, the shutters etc. then yes, all that can be changed eventually.

If we're breaking our butt paying a mortgage every month, I don't want to drive up to my house every day after work and think "ugh, it's so not what I wanted!"

ITA, our house is a freaking disaster but with new siding, shutters, trim, new front door and some weeding it will rock.

totally totally agree.

but, if it seems like (on paper at least) it has the "guts" of what you want inside, you should make an appt to see it before totally lopping it off your list.

No, I care more about the style of my house than its size. Maybe I'm just weird. As long as a house has enough bedrooms and I can fit my furniture in it, that's fine with me.

I bought a house that isn't my style on the outside. I looked at a ton of houses and it was the first that I looooved the layout of on the inside with all updated baths and kitchen. I would have had to spend much more to get something I loved on the inside and outside. I think the inside of the house matters more. From the photo it looks like the house is at worst boring, not ugly. I'd go inside and see how the space matches your needs.

I am at a point where I care much less about the outside than what it has to offer on the inside. But I am desperate, lol.Chat Icon

Re: would you buy an ugly house if...

I know where that house is. I have seen it on MLSLI.....I dont know if I would buy a house that I didnt like the look of or know that we really couldnt change the look of.

For example - our cape. We do not like the color of the siding but we do like the look of the house. We know we can always change the siding and then it will look a lot better....but I think you need to love the style of the house other than things you can change.

Re: would you buy an ugly house if...

We actually bought a house that I hated the outside. The grass was dead, the landscaping was bare. It just looked blah. But we saved money and had the landscaping done the next spring. It looks so much better now.

Our backyard is gross too but we are in the process right now of doing a few things to make it look nice.
