Would you buy a house that was ugly on the outside? Updated with Pic
But really nice on the inside? We are going to look at one on Saturday. It's 10 years old and is a contemporary high ranch. It's in great shape, but just looks like a big, plain box. Great location and SD.
I guess we could eventually do the outside, but its at the higher end of our budget so that is not very realistic.
What are your thoughts? Ok - I guess its not THAT bad, but not really my style. Would shutters help?

Honestly, no. I would not buy a house that was not in the style I was looking for. I guess you could make a ranch into a farm ranch with a second floor - that I could envision - but I don't know how you could change a high ranch.

I think I would, if it was a bit under our budget. It would be a concession for me, in order to get a more affordable home. Exterior upgrades/repairs can run very high AND they are weather dependent.

Re: Would you buy a house that was ugly on the outside?
Our exterior was ugly (so was the interior for that matter). The roof siding and windows were all dated from the 70's and the landscaping left a lot to be desired.
We are in the process of updating everything now
Even though it needed work, we both saw the potential

If it was a style of home and layout I didn't like I wouldn't buy it. If it was that I need to put siding and a roof and some landscaping, yes.

Re: Would you buy a house that was ugly on the outside?
I think if it is the actual architecture of the house that you hate, then no.
If it was a matter of paint/siding, windows and some primping it up then, yes.
But I think a ranch is a ranch and there is probably not much to do to change that unless you overhaul the whole house.
But then again, if I loved the inside, land and location maybe I would suck it up.

Re: Would you buy a house that was ugly on the outside?
If it was just the siding and landscaping I absoulty would. It would cost me alot less to put siding up and plant some flowers then redo the inside of the house. When we were looking at house it use to annoy us to no end with we would drive up to a beautiful house on the outside just to see that everything was orginal on the inside. You dont live on outside.

It depends on how much work it needed to make it look to your taste

Re: Would you buy a house that was ugly on the outside?
ABSOLUTELY! The house could be ugly inside and out........it wouldn't make a difference to us cuz we'd change it anyway.
It's actualy what we are looking for b/c DH is quite the handyman

Re: Would you buy a house that was ugly on the outside?
If I loved the inside and it needed minimal work, and the outside needed help with curb appeal, then I would do it. Doing work on the inside of a house is a huge PITA, from my experience.

i agree however, it is on the higher end of her budget so she cannot afford to make that many changes.

Re: Would you buy a house that was ugly on the outside?
I know what you mean about high ranches - due to the layout, they are boxy. In the future you could always add really nice steps, a portico, some reverse gables - it would look different. But still boxy. It's hard to escape the boxy look with a high ranch.
To me, the inside is more important. That's where I spend my time. As long as the outside was clean and in good condition, it wouldn't matter to me.

If I liked the location and loved the inside - yes I would
You can always fix it up on the outside eventually
and you can do less expensive things first like plant flowers or put on a porch to "pretty it" up

I agree. Especially if you could see this being your "forever house" and the inside doesnt need much work.
If I had to wait a very long time to have enough $ to fix the outside though, then I probably wouldnt go for it.

Re: Would you buy a house that was ugly on the outside? Updated with Pic
that house needs alot of help on the outside- I don't like how the driveway is blocking then entry way
this is going to cost alot of money to make it look right
what do the other homes around it look like? if they all look similar to this- I would not want to live on the block
