Would you feel bad asking IL to exchange gift?
My MIL always seem to buy whatever she likes for gifts, which is fine....but they bought my DD (be 4 in march) the Step2 Flip 'N Doodle Easel Desk with stool.
For some, that might be great, but our DDs already have a 4 seated table in their playroom. We also have a 15mo, who wants to walk with crayons, crumbles paper, etc....So we keep the crayons/paper out of her reach.
So the easel is just going to take up space & not be used as a nice station. (would be great for DD2, so she would have a space when her older sister wants her away from her. LOL
I feel it's not fair to not let our DD enjoy her toy, because her little sister will make a mess of it & would rather her get a toy she would enjoy.
I think DH feels bad returning it, but I told him maybe they should ask with something like that in the future, they are going to notice when it's not set up.

In this case, no, I don't see it as a problem. Just explain to them as you explained to us, and it'll be fine.

I think it is ok to ask, especially since it is a large space item.
MIL always buys gifts we cannot use. DH doesn't want to make her feel bad so we just keep it. I have a whole closet full of stuff she has given us that we can't seem to return/exchange.

Re: Would you feel bad asking IL to exchange gift?
I would just explain it to them and see if they wouldn't mind exchanging it. If they seem to express that it would be a pain for them (maybe they ordered it online, maybe they didn't keep the receipt, etc), then I'd just drop it. But at least mention it!
For DS' birthday, my MIL got him the YGG tent that ***I*** put on his birthday wish list. What I didn't realize is that it's a real tent, not a pop up tent and we don't have space for it! Totally my bad. I did mention it to MIL that I might return it for something else since I didn't realize and she was totally fine with it. In the end, I kept it only bc I was too lazy to exchange it, lol, but she was cool with it.

They got it at Costco (barcode was on it), & they go there all the time, so shouldn't be a problem.
I typically put things in closet if we don't like it, but this should be out, so they would notice if we aren't using it.

If you go to costco you can return it, just have their info available to give the cs rep. I just needed their name and address. Then they can give you the credit on a gc.

!
I'm not a club member to Costco though, so a GC would do me any good
