I agreed with a lot of what you say, but you are also taking away the degree of satisfaction that can come frmo professional accomplishments. I set a career goal for myself when I was young, and I accomplished that goal. Nothing got me to where I am today but working hard. I am very proud of that. That doesn't mean that I care what people think of me- but I do have a sense of accomplishment. I recently turned 30 and looked around my life and thought- wow! I am doing pretty well for myself- and that includes professionally.

I don't judge women who don't feel the same way as I do, but it needs to be acknowledged that a woman can be proud of her professional life and its not just based on what other people think of her. Working at a job I chose and love, and getting recognized for good work, definitely contributes to my self esteem.

I mentioned that what works for one person may not work for the other. Personal accomplishments are always good especially if you have worked very hard for it. And like I mentioned in my previous post, a woman should always be educated and have the means to support herself if her husband was her provider and he was no longer there. Perhaps I see it a little different than you in the sense that as an individual anyone should be proud of their accomplishments and as long as that person "acknowledges" it for themselves, what other thinks or not or if other acknowledges....it's not really crucial.
I think everyone has different things that contribute to their self-esteem.....for some women....their professional life is very important...for others...maybe one of them....but maybe it's not.
Thi is just my personal opinion and I personally do not judge anyone.
I always feel that everyone should do what makes them happy.

Re: Would you feel comfortable...

For me, it is not that it would make me uncomfortable, it is more that there are other things I want to do outside of my home. If I had the option, if we were very wealthy, I think I would like a combination of working part time and being home more to do things around the house. I have worked hard to get where I am professionally, and would hate to give that up completely, but I actually would like more time to devote to projects and interests outside of my job.

I think whatever works for you is the right thing. If both partners are happy with one supporting the other, who am I to say that anyone is wasting her/his life. People find fulfillment in different ways. I also think that women started working partially out of necessity, but partially because more opportunities became available to them. My college only went coed in the 1970s, I think.

ETA: I am 38, and I think my answer would have been "No way!" before I hit 30 - just something to think about Chat Icon

Re: Would you feel comfortable...

i used to think that I would be miserable if I didn't work.
But now, I could see myself staying home most of the time, and maybe creating a tutoring business on the side....so that I'd still be doing something - but not be forced to grade 1000+ papers every month!Chat Icon

Nope, I was a SAHW while we lived in Ireland. I loved it, especially when I got preggo and I could nap whenever I wanted. I did a lot of things for myself at first. Took Spanish classes went to Yoga. My job was so stressful in NY that I was so happy to leave and relax. Plus, that was my in to being a SAHM.

Re: Would you feel comfortable...

I didn't work for the last few months while while I was pregnant and was miserable... All my friends worked and I was lonely. Everyday was completely lonely and the same.... All there was to do was shop and I felt bad about spending so much money when it wasn't a holiday... The only other people who were around during the day were SAHM's, so if you wanted to go out you were in a kid friendly environment with those moms.

Now I am a SAHM and spend my days hitting the gym hard, lunch with friends who have kids, shop, and go on playdates. I take three mommy and me classes with my daughter a week and have a blast... I made so many friends since I had the baby and we paint the town red!.

The thing is- a different world opened up to me when I had kids and it was not available to me before. There were no other people without kids for me to hang with before. You would have to invent a kid.. If that makes sense.

eta We have a pt nanny and lady who cleans once a week so I am not really a "homemaker"... Just someone who likes to kick back with their little girl and friends:)

Re: Would you feel comfortable...

i have a full time job and make a very good salary but only have to work about 9 hours on the job site. for the next couple of months, i am only required to be at my job 3-5 hours a week. i do work from home in addition to on-site hours but no where near 40 hours (closer to 15-20). i guess i have the best of both worlds; full-time salary and VERY limited hours.

Re: Would you feel comfortable...

I work from home so I get to get a lot of errands done - I usually make a nice dinner (when I am not going stir-crazy and have to go out to eat), and get laundry, dry cleaning and shopping done during the day. I do have a woman come to clean once a week because I do actually work.... even if it is from home. I just started my own business so for a while I will be living off DH's salary until I turn a profit. This is weird for me, but hoepfully it will be worth it in the end.

I could not give up on my business right now - and hope to have a baby and continue to work from home...

Since I don't work, when my husband comes home, everything is about him...how his workday was, his commute etc. It works for us but I could see how it wouldn't for most.

Re: Would you feel comfortable...

IF my husband made enough money that I didnt have to work. I wouldnt, BUT I would do something such as volunteering, and on a daily basis, or start my own company to work, that type of thing. I would be bored sitting at home all day, but if this were an option, I would Go back to school and for a long time. I wouldnt neccesarily stay home doing nothing, but yes, I sure wouldnt be working f/t like I am now.

I get bored yes, but Im also lazy Chat Icon

If my DH could support me and our future children, honestly I would have no problem with it.

BUT I would be taking classes or in a some type of graduate or PHD program.

I would workout and spend my time studying and I would volunteer at an animal hospital or animal shelter.

Re: Would you feel comfortable...

well I didn't work for a whole year after my daughter was born. it was a decision we made, because I didn't feel comfortable going back to work and leaving my baby with a stranger. It was very hard financially wise.

I loved being there for my daughter but it was very hard on me emotionally and mentally.
I felt like I needed more, like something was missing.

I think that if it was a situation where he made really good money and we didn't have to struggle like we did, i wouldn't hesitate for a minute.

Re: Would you feel comfortable...

with having a baby now...I actually enjoy staying home and taking care of the house as overwhelming as it is at times.

I want to go back to work for the $$ and for the socialization. If I was not going back to work I'd spend more time with SIL and maybe working from home.

Re: Would you feel comfortable...

I stayed at home during the last few months of my pregnancy and while I was bored, it was nice to relax a bit before the baby was born. There were times when I felt like I wasn't contributing, but DH assured me that while I wasn't contributing financially, I was contributing in other ways, plus he was glad I wasn't stressing myself out during the last trimester. Now that I'm a SAHM, I feel completely comfortable, because I'm constantly busy and I love being such a big part of my son's life. I'm glad that DH and I are able to do it.

For those of you that don't work, and are not looking for work, how did the decision to stop working come about? Were you between jobs when you got married or something like that?

My mother isn't working, but she was laid off 5 years ago. She inteded to take a break & then look for something, but she ended up taking on more family responsibilites ( like helping out her parents), so I don't think she will go back, but she is almost 60.

Thats kind of what happened to me. I got laid off and just kind of took on all the responibilities of the house. I take care of my father, grandmother etc. Plus, we're also trying to have a baby. We already had decided that I would stay home once we had a baby so it's just happening a little earlier than planned. Things are tight, but we manage ok. Believe me I am never ever bored. I don't feel like the money DH brings isn't mine, it's ours. We both work full time, just that I work in the home. I had been working since I was 14 so it was a bit of an adjustment but it's not too bad.
